We are excited to share our new paper in Nucleic Acids Research. Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is a surveillance pathway that detects and degrades faulty mRNAs. By probing the SMG1–SMG8–SMG9 complex, we show that NMD tolerates loss of key regulatory components better than expected.

🚨 Publication Alert 🚨 New work from our #CRC1678 members @volkerboehm.bsky.social and Niels Gehring in @narjournal.bsky.social shows that SMG8 and SMG9 act as nonessential but crucial modulators safeguarding the efficiency and resilience of the NMD pathway. academic.oup.com/nar/article/...

SMG1:SMG8:SMG9-complex integrity supports efficient execution of nonsense-mediated mRNA decay
Abstract. Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is a translation-dependent mRNA turnover pathway, which degrades transcripts containing premature termination

How are faulty #RNA degraded? New mechanistic insight into NMD: 1️⃣SMG5 & SMG6 PIN domains form a composite endonuclease (cPIN) 2️⃣ SMG5 completes the SMG6 active site, enabling efficient mRNA cleavage Fantastic collaboration with @labconti.bsky.social 🙏 👉 www.nature.com/articles/s41... 1/n

Composite SMG5-SMG6 PIN domain formation is essential for NMD - Nature Communications
Execution of mRNA cleavage in nonsense-mediated decay remained elusive. The authors show that SMG5 complements SMG6 to form a highly active, composite endonuclease with expanded catalytic center that ...
