Josh @geekcritique.org · 4hHe's fast, got the cartwheel, the Chimpy Charge rules, his double jump thing is super fun and feels great, and the rocketbarrels are stellar - and I love that I inherently knew how to hover with them because I'd played Pilotwings three years earlier, the N64 was such an island unto itself. 060
Josh @geekcritique.org · 4hAs with most games he's in that aren't Smash Bros, I think I'd go with Diddy. 160
Josh @geekcritique.org · 4hI think so! It's sort of taking Banjo's world design and taking lots of cues from Mario Odyssey to temper it into something more palatable for modern audiences. But I am having a REALLY great time with it. It doesn't have a lot in common mechanically with IL, that remains my favorite Yooka game. 110
Josh @geekcritique.org · 6h> top 10 non-Sonic Dreamcast games? 10. Virtua Tennis 2 9. Sega Rally 2 8. Power Stone 7. Typing of the Dead 6. Daytona USA 2001 5. Marvel vs. Capcom 4. NFL 2K2 3. Shenmue 2. Crazy Taxi 1. Phantasy Star Online (SA2 would be #3, SA1 would be #1) 130
Josh @geekcritique.org · 7hTippy Top 10 Video Game Series 1. Sonic 2. Donkey Kong (gap for emphasis) 3. Super Smash Bros 4. Metroid 5. Undertale/Deltarune 6. Pokémon 7. Mario 8. "The Orange Box" 9. Metal Gear 10. Mega Man/X 281
Josh @geekcritique.org · 7hI figured it out. It turns out every single source on the entire internet is just wrong about it! You need 135 Pagies before Vendi will sell it to you. I'm guessing whoever was making the guides just assumed it happened in Glitterglaze? 000
Josh @geekcritique.org · 8hAnd like in every other regard (except Kartos he's not as good) it's SUCH a vast refinement on the OG, but the quality of life definitely removed some of the fun for me. 270
Josh @geekcritique.org · 8hIn Replaylee it kind of feels like the whole game is splayed out in front of me all at once and I can take it or leave it. In the original, I got to the final world and still had dozens of Pagies to find for the ending. In Replaylee, I've only been to three stages and I could beat the game ALREADY. 180
Josh @geekcritique.org · 8hYooka-Replaylee is obviously really great but MAN I wish there was an option to bring back some friction. Like what hooked me about the original was that I had such a strong sense of progression going from level to level, unlocking new moves, eventually expanding the worlds... 2130
Josh @geekcritique.org · 13hCRUSH 40 TOP 5: 1) Open Your Heart 2) I Am... All of Me 3) Free 4) Live & Learn 5) Knight of the Wind Special mention should also go to one of my favorites OSTs, Secret Rings. Seven Rings in Hand, Let the Speed Mend It, and Unawakening Float would all rank high if I were doing per-decade top 10s. 140
Josh @geekcritique.org · 13hCrash is only 30, though. Anyway, I can't possibly narrow it down that much, so 1990s: VOCAL: Sonic Boom NON: IceCap 2 (Genesis) 2000s: V: Endless Possibility N: Rooftop Run Day 2010s: V: Reach for the Stars N: Studiopolis 1 2020s: V: Break Through It All N: Pinball Carnival 1 150
Josh @geekcritique.org · 14h> Did you bet on blu ray or HDDVD A friend and I went in together on this very PS3, just so we could play MGS4. For over a year afterward, it was our only game! So technically Blu-ray! But I don't think I had anything but games until the war was completely over. 1100
Josh @geekcritique.org · 14hYeah, I immediately knew it made current games look MUCH better, but anything older looked much worse. Thus why even in 2010, I already had my Genesis hooked up to that little CRT. xD 120
Josh @geekcritique.org · 15hlol no, I thought his motivation was funny and was relieved they didn't undo Gamma's story by bringing him back for no good reason the way they did with someone else. :V 211
Josh @geekcritique.org · 16hThen in mid-08, I spent $450(!!!) on this 20-inch 720p set, and it was the most glorious display tech upgrade I've ever seen. The 360 looked INCREDIBLE. The Wii looked... not so great but at least it was widescreen? The PS2 looked godawful and I officially stopped playing it here. :V 050
Josh @geekcritique.org · 16hIt wasn't too bad, but I got in pretty early. I got my 360 at the end of 07 and most games still supported 4:3, but I played Sonic 06 on my CRT with black bars on the top and bottom. 390
Josh @geekcritique.org · 16hNow imagine how you'd feel if Reggie came out and said he opposed even releasing the game. 000

It's the continued treatment of "testing" as some vague, ephemeral idea. What are they testing exactly? Who knows. Who cares. You're testing. Do the test. Aperture needs to keep testing. 91431269

Josh @geekcritique.org · 03/10/2026But at least during the 2014-2025 drought, we didn't have to endure Diddy's Ditties, or the humiliation of Modern DK inexplicably turning into the villain that Cranky was in the arcade era. 3171
Josh @geekcritique.org · 03/10/2026That's what TEN GOT'DANG YEARS of zero major games and being painted as "merely" an ancillary member of the Mario cast will do to a guy. Twice. It happened twice. 3273
Josh @geekcritique.org · 03/10/2026I thought of that and I do agree! But I figured if they have a PS5 and are asking this question, there's no way they haven't. 030
Josh @geekcritique.org · 03/10/2026She is toward the bottom of my character tierlist, so bye I guess! 100
Josh @geekcritique.org · 03/10/2026You might also try Mario 64's decomp, TONS of good mods and QoL changes in there. 151
Josh @geekcritique.org · 03/10/2026It's hard to find anything that's an exact match for 3D Mario's acrobatic athletics. If you want a great collect-a-thon, I've been really into Yooka-Replaylee lately (on sale for $21 right now), and Toree Saturn ($5) might help scratch the acrobatic itch. 2111

Josh @geekcritique.org · 02/10/2026But hey, remember that we did the same thing. :P Like, I'm sure there were 80s kids circa 2010 going, "lol people online are pretending they like the N64 better than the NES, that's funny! wait... it like JUST came out, what do they mean they grew up with it!?" 120
Josh @geekcritique.org · 02/10/2026One of my proudest moments as a Pokémon fan. Red was way more popular, but those of us who always knew Blastoise was superior were just inherently better at video games. 1142
Josh @geekcritique.org · 02/10/2026All of this. My muted list is several hundred words deep. Social media - especially a feed featuring people you don't know and didn't follow - turned out to be an extremely poor method for keeping up with things that actually matter. 1192
Josh @geekcritique.org · 02/10/2026Yeah, I'd already lived through that backlash for Gens 3 and 4 by that point, so I basically just ignored the internet entirely for 5 and had a great time with it. Then it became "the last good Pokémon game" for a while, just like Gen 2 used to be! 010
Josh @geekcritique.org · 02/10/2026I think a part of the reason I extracted myself from The Discourse is because at a certain point, I felt like most of what I was doing was pointlessly trying to set the record straight, and I got tired of getting death threats over it. Sometimes you've just got let 'em figure it out. 591
Josh @geekcritique.org · 02/10/2026Of course! You can't have first-hand experience of things you weren't there for. That's not a problem. The issue, to ring a phrase, is if they make really passionate, extremely wrong statements about verifiable historical events that I can actually remember pretty well. :V 2204
