DRAGONFLIGHT (1978)
 Acrylic on Masonite - 20" X 30"

For the 1st book in Anne McCaffrey's legendary Dragonriders of Pern series, I wanted to create a literal visualization of the title. I selected an aerial POV and tilted the horizon to simulate the dizzying sensation of flight. #art #booksky 🪐📚

A flight of dragons swoops past a rocky mountain peak down that mostly obscures the sun. The light tints green sky yellow along the ridge. With wings spread wide, the lead dragon pulls up from a dive with beak open to expose teeth and tongue. The arc of its climb intersects a red striated planet. The female dragonrider raises one arm up as she glances back over her shoulder.

Lizard of the day: Common leopard gecko! One of the most common pet lizards due to their appeareance and ease to maintain! They're native to Southwest Asia and can shed their tail, which they wiggle when catching prey. They're also considered the first domesticated lizards!

WEYRWORLD (1990)
Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 27" x 36" My schedule was booked up many months in advance, so Del Rey Books commissioned me to do this cover before the book was even written. #art #booksky 🪐📚

With wings spread wide, a white dragon perches on a rocky spire that rises out of cloud cover. Its legs are set unevenly as it gains a hold. Viewed from behind, a rider is saddle-mounted with legs straddling its neck. A handful of other dragons and riders are gathered on similar peaks for a conference in the clouds. The valley wall as seen only in the distance meanders across the horizon. Two large crescent moons hang in a hazy blue sky.

DRAGON ABOARD (2013) Acrylic - 18” x 24” Anne McCaffrey often reminded readers that her Pern novels were science fiction. This scene from ALL THE WEYRS OF PERN did exactly that and was originally chosen for the cover. 1/3 #art #booksky 🪐📚

In the cargo hold of a spaceship, a dragon floats with female rider saddled high on its shoulders. Gripping reins, she cranes her neck back to glance at the viewer. Disorienting, the perspective into the cargo hold is slightly angled with the lines of interior structure not quite lining up with the wide octagonal bulkhead leading into it. There is no true horizon to orient on which prompts a sense of weightlessness and implies slow rotation. The hold itself is cropped with the right of it falling off-panel. Just past the dragon, a large porthole provides a view planet-side with sun partially obscured behind a bright arc. A red dot burns menacingly nearby. In the lower left, an access panel glows with dots of red, yellow, and green. The display screen just above is lit with a picture of the author. Her hair is white and her smile is warm.

This book has become less fiction to me as the years have gone by. The message it carries has remained with me since I read it in school (not by assignment, it was in a dusty unused section of the library). I want to believe enough of us see it though, and will attempt to change it however we can!

It's a lot of work to make assets or extras, honestly it's incredible to just play with the base models and I'm thankful folks even make them at all! If I had access to the communal lizard brain cell more often, I'd totally learn blender and help people make cool add-on assets though aaaaa
