Timely passage. Tolkien is careful in his words. Pity from Latin "pietas" implies a duty to show mercy. Gollum deserved to die, yet one has a duty not to kill unnecessarily, and pity opens the door to redemption, and not just for the guilty: A nation without it is irredeemable. ⚓️

But to the wicked God says: * “Why do you recite my statutes, and take my covenant upon your lips; Since you refuse discipline, * and toss my words behind your back? When you see a thief, you make him your friend, * and you cast in your lot with adulterers.” Psalter 🔥 today. ⚓️

Cædmon is very skilled at creating a nest between me & Heath. I've been thinking about whether our pets will be in the Heavenly Kingdom. Since I believe that the Resurrection involves not just human bodies, but all the material creation—new heavens & new earth—I have to say yes (contra Aquinas). ⚓️

This is how our government has been corrupted: 1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians 2) Elected officials rewrite rules in donors' favor 3) Donors make huge gains 4) Repeat This is why we must get Big Money out of politics — and support the candidates who will fix the system.

The belief that evil can be, and ultimately will be transformed into greater good is not a concept unique to Christianity. The Japanese will repair a broken vessel with gold. In Hatha Yoga we visualize breathing light through our woundedness. Christ's wounds do not disappear, but are glorified. ⚓️

It’s dark. Sam asks for a tale. Strider tells of Tinúviel: ‘It is a fair tale, though it is sad, as are all the tales of Middle-earth. ‘The leaves were long, the grass was green, The hemlock-umbels tall and fair, And in the glade a light was seen Of stars in shadow shimmering…’

Living Into our Bodies as Christians a 🧵 The last year was the most delightful in my spiritual journey so far. It has had its painfully difficult periods, but they have been worth it. At this point I am happy living in this body God gave me, which I could never before say. ⚓️

As someone who loves the Latin mass and a lot of traditional Catholic devotion but who is gay and has, let us say, trouble with traditionalists, his story resonates very powerfully. religionnews.com/2026/10/02/a... ⚓️

A former SSPX priest embraces life as a gay man and tattoo artist
EXTON, Pennsylvania — In some traditionalist circles, Palmquist’s story — from SSPX priest to talking on YouTube about his faith and being gay — is already infamous.

Today's jobs report is a reminder that tax cuts for corporations and the rich don’t create jobs or grow the economy. What's required is investment in working people — and better wages. When workers have money to spend, the economy grows and businesses create more jobs. Remember this.

Adam & Eve's temptation was "You will be like gods, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:5). Gods know good & evil so they can judge mortals. This sin caused guilt and shame. Yet in order to avoid facing & resolving our sin, which is hard, we still try to be as gods, judging our neighbors instead. ⚓️

Delight in and thankfulness for simple pleasures helps make for a healthy soul. My elevenses today was Earl Grey tea with milk and a lemon biscuit from a local bakery, served in this cheerful and very hobbitish bright yellow cup and saucer. Thank God for the small things. ⚓️

I have started another reading of The Hobbit & the Lord of the Rings. My favorite quote is "The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many." Like Frodo, my personal quest will doubtless prove beyond my strength, but where I have shown mercy will open the door to grace to make up the difference. ⚓️

My parents couldn't have children. They asked our (Episcopal) priest & he said to ask help from St. Michael, the protector of unwanted children. Soon they got me & named me Michael. This proved providential as my survival as a gay boy and man of my generation has demanded hard spiritual warfare. ⚓️

Moderns tend to see the Devil as a symbol of sexual desire. Yet the Devil of Scripture is the "accuser" who makes us self-righteousness accusers, and brings false guilt, shame, despair, and desire to destroy ourselves. It is that Devil we call on St. Michael to protects us from. ⚓️

My introduction to Pieper was Fr. James Griffiths assigning us in Systematic Theology the book Leisure the Basis of Culture. Here he shows how contemplation is the path, the only path, to happiness, and that a happy life is grounded in contemplation of the love of God for us. ⚓️

Since the death of Henry our other cat Cædmon had been moping around. He's far more his affectionate self the last couple of days, but he's aging too. He & Henry have a dear place in our hearts, which makes me think our beloved pets will be with us in the Kingdom of Heaven. ⚓️

Have you ever thanked God for your body? My experience is that right use of any of the gifts of God begins with gratitude. Our bodies are wondrous. So I thank God for my body, as it is now, not as I want it to be, and I get specific, e.g., where would I be without my legs & feet? ⚓️

Yogasmith and the chapel with the Blessed Sacrament in my neighborhood. The latter shows me my center, the presence of Christ our God among us; the former how to remain centered when my body feels stress. In this time of threats to our planet and increasing injustice being centered is essential.* ⚓️

The desire to hurt those back who have hurt us can be very strong. Doing so, even in our heads, can bring us a momentary relief and sense of satisfaction. However in the long run it brings healing neither to us nor to those who have hurt us, likely themselves acting out of their own hurt and pain. ⚓️

Photo taken kayaking Sunday on Lake Crescent (WA). A stunningly beautiful lake, deep, cold, & dangerous, with ocean blue water. I strive for mindfulness of God's presence everywhere, and here I was reminded of a hymn from my Episcopal childhood, "formless all lovely forms declare thy loveliness." ⚓️

This has become my most common "mantra". I take long breaths and pray the whole thing breathing in, and again breathing out, while doing yoga, and sitting and walking meditation. I like the "us" form, because it takes the focus off myself, and has me praying for others. ⚓️

At Yogasmith in Seattle one evening, meditatively moving together focused on "metta", the loving-kindness that unites all beings (Christians call it the Love of God.), seeing, smelling, hearing each other breathe—*My* mantra was the Jesus Prayer. You won't find that experience on social media. ⚓️

"Nisi paenitentiam agitis, in aeternum peribitis." (said in a French accent). "Unless you do penance, you shall perish for ever." My friend l'Abbé Berger used to say this to me to remind me that one of things we must do when we have been forgiven is to do what we can to undo any evil we've done. ⚓️

Assessing the state of the family this morning—yes, we're all sad, including our other cat Cædmon, who is seeking cuddles & reassurance. But we are all much better than when I've been through like past losses. Facing the hard & painful head on, together, brings out the best in us & brings us closer.

Our tabby, Henry, died this morning. We knew it was coming fast, & he hated vets, so we kept him at home as comfortable as possible, petted and cuddled. I've focused on little else the past two days—hard but worth it all so that we could all walk through this with him. He died knowing he was loved.

This is Cædmon. When we got him he was a tiny sickly rescue kitten who, I kid you not, fit in the palm of my hand. He was very vocal, so my husband the English and Classics major named him after the first English poet.
