I've been making some extinct English breads for #sourdoughseptember This one is Gervase Markham's brown bread. I made it with 50% barley flour, the rest made up of rye, wheat & bean flour. Plus salt & water of course. It's the bread you made for your lowest servants. Twas heavy but not too bad!

Been trying to reconstruct the cost of an eighteenth-century pinery. In today’s money, it’s about £35,000 to build, plus £5,000 a year to maintain. This would yield 150 pineapples a year, if you were lucky. This feels a bit like the Georgian version of NFTs. #FoodHistory #EarlyModern #AcademicSky

I've been on my hols in Wales this week - near Aberystwyth - I have of course eaten plenty of Welsh cakes, bara brith and laverbread, but most exciting thing for me what that the farmhouse we stayed in still had the original bread oven! Sadly it wasn't usable...
