If you’re going to get a pension or will need some form of social care, you’re a stakeholder in Andy Burnham’s vision and pledges. It’s been years and years since the No 10 operation played politics so well on two adjacent social issues.

Support for a NHS/social care service free at point of use are both around 89%. You just know a cohort of poor people not 20 years from needing care themselves are going to be convinced by a tiny number of unimaginably rich people that this is a terrible idea. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

This is *not* the result of "the success of Mahmood's reforms", but of earlier measures/other factors. Her proposals could make it considerably *worse* in future years. A few other points linked below.. archive.ph/0psJ8
Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.

Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration significantly undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana Mahmood’s reforms, which have seen net migration cut to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

Labour sources familiar with the budget process, however, said that the figure was now closer to £6.5bn. The OBR’s migration forecasts have been consistently higher than real numbers in recent years.

Treasury officials, who have long expected Mahmood’s reforms to cause a hit to headroom, described the number as “pure speculation” but did not deny that Healey would have to contend with a larger funding gap than expected because of falling migration

Piddington farce and obvious racist undertones is a great example of what Nigel Farage and co think they can exploit with the £72m to undermine democracy. While the Govt continues to understand illegitimate concerns based on bullshit, there‘ll be Piddingtons all across the country.

If the immediate and farcical reaction is to hold a referendum based on no other knowledge than the people being brought to your community are brown asylum seekers then the whole premise is racist. Among their 300-odd residents are a set of stupid and/or gullible racists. #Piddington
