Clyde @gametank.zone · 18hThe catch is willingness to work on something also correlates with willingness to stick around and steward the thing. 110
Clyde @gametank.zone · 19hI agree there, though I am particular on not pinning my other stances on "work makes you stronger therefore you should always do everything the hard way" as an inherent good. 110
Clyde @gametank.zone · 19hI don't necessarily agree that bluesky needed LLMs or more investment to get this far. Would they have needed a bigger team, or just a different team, or more time? LLMs appeal to notions like "it has to be me!" and "it has to be now!" which make more sense in a capitalist mindset than in mine 100
Clyde @gametank.zone · 19hThe "when" is complicated. My initial quit decision was New Year's, but there have been occasional relapses. Doesn't help that Google shows you their chatbot answers nonconsentually now. 110
Clyde @gametank.zone · 20hI'd used it for that before. So I recognize that it can feel helpful. Personally I found that it would mislead me too often in ways that "using it right" wouldn't have prevented. I also didn't like the effect it seemed to have on my tolerance for mental effort or ability to focus. 100
Clyde @gametank.zone · 20hSo I think the comparison to subsistence farming is kind of a trap tbh. Not by you, but by the marketing framing of the AI startups. It's very easy to see how mass production of food benefits us, and the benefits of automating the labor that makes it possible. I'm not sold on that for code. 100
Clyde @gametank.zone · 22hI consider it adversarial because the core product promises of "More product! Faster results! No need to think anymore!" feel ultimately pointless outside a fash-leaning value system. 110
Clyde @gametank.zone · 28/09/2026Personally I'm not eschewing AI tools as "fake" or "impure". I just don't like importing black boxes into my problem solving matrix and LLMs even run locally are the most opaque black box of all. 020
Clyde @gametank.zone · 28/09/2026Two things that proAI people say that are false and I don't want to contribute to making less false: "Everyone is using it now!" and "_____ wouldn't have been possible without it!" From where I sit it looks a lot less like yielding power and more like locally creating the world I want to live in. 110
Clyde @gametank.zone · 28/09/2026But what about when embracing the adversary's technology makes it stronger? When the the tech is designed so that no matter how you use it, it furthers their goals? 210
Reposted by Clydepassivestar @passivestar.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I'm not super excited about blurry 50 fps gaming where it takes your $3000 gpu several frames to converge light into a discernible picture. I love how great games got to look but the tradeoffs we took aren't very good imo We need nice baked GI again that runs on a laptop you found behind a dumpster 1134735
Clyde @gametank.zone · 24/09/2026spent all yesterday on tasks not inside a computer screen and that felt pretty good (gross as it was to open the P-trap when replacing the bathroom sink fixtures) 020
Clyde @gametank.zone · 22/09/2026mind mapping on the whiteboard always ends up being the trick to clearing the ADHD static but for some reason I forget to do it until I've spent days too zoinked to do anything maybe i should write a reminder on the whiteboard 130

Clyde @gametank.zone · 17/09/2026somehow I went weeks without a forced msoft restart and update and now the last three mornings I come back down to all my programs closed assumably to shove more lurching lasagna mandrels into my life without consent 010

Clyde @gametank.zone · 11/09/2026Same with CRTs. The ones I had to pay for were because I was in a hurry but many in my collection were free. 110
Clyde @gametank.zone · 10/09/2026Which is totally fair- I talked to a lot of people this weekend who wouldn't feel much direct impact from the availability of schematics. They were excited at the prospect of a console outside the big three; especially one that embraces physical media and creators without corporate backing 000
Clyde @gametank.zone · 10/09/2026Might start leading with "indie console" instead of "open-source console" I mean, the GameTank's still open-source! It's just that I often get asked what that means, when showing it outside of hackerspaces. :P 430
Clyde @gametank.zone · 10/09/2026me: oops i started an entirely new barely tangential project instead of working through the ones turning into geologic strata on my desk 020
Clyde @gametank.zone · 09/09/2026Also is it just me or does it seem like there's been a fresh infusion of cash into the astroturf in the last 24-48 hours? 120
Clyde @gametank.zone · 09/09/2026Learning to write software is a gateway to incredible creative power that incurs no materials or external services costs, and there is a LOT of money going into trying to convince you otherwise. They want you to assume you have to pay them to accomplish anything, or else your ideas will languish. 140
