Night Watch was more or less my first Discworld novel. And "gilt by association" is still one of my favourite puns 20 years later.

This isn't even a warning flag, it's a warning lighthouse. Everyone should steer clear. There's no good reason to give WotC your money or attention.

Faber Castelle's Cobalt Blue is a very nice hue, as is Waterman's Mysterious Blue. I'd love to suggest some Sailor or Pilot colors but they use proprietary cartridges - actually come to think of it so do the Lamys, so that is going to limit things for you a bit.

I need to set aside some time this week to do a mass cleaning session for my #fountainpens. Some of these have had ink sitting in them for far longer than I'm comfortable thinking about, and its about time I changed up my pen rotation anyway.

If you're enjoying your Al-Star but want something with some more heft, a Lamy Studio might be a good alternative. I also have a soft spot for Kaweco's metal Sport pens, but as they're pocket pens some writers find them too small. What color ink are you after?

Moorcock intended for Elric to be the anti-Conan: frail, depressed, starts in power and gives it up, and cursed to continually end up a puppet of the gods. But he certainly became a template that you find everywhere in fantasy fiction (and beyond).

All #TTRPG campaigns become comedic RPGs if you play them with the right group, or long enough. Not sure what the guff is about otherwise.

"Tell, don't show" is in full effect because nerds love stats, I guess. Not that I have any room to talk here, my favorite RPGs are the ones that require 3 page character sheets.

Gordo @gallowglass.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Ah yeah. It may feel more like a "hello there fellow nerds" template rather than a story that's actually digging into how its own world and plot structure works.

I'm sure some of the conversational aspects come from the book being written in first person - kinda comes with the format, really. But yeah, the book is definitely written to target readers that have a very specific set of preconceptions and biases that I find a little alienating.

A photo of the box for the 90s Sailor Moon "Crystal Message" fortune telling crystal ball toy from Japan. The package shows a "crystal ball" with a Sailor Moon figure inside from Sailor Moon S that will light up and talk, telling you your fortune specifically in things like "luck" and "romance".

Of course there's nothing wrong with enjoying what is essentially literary fast food, my own tastes are highly suspect at the best of times. I'm only thinking about it now because the Carl books seem to come up a *lot* in certain stratum of the rpg hobby community.

Gordo @gallowglass.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Yeah, for me right now that's _Dungeon Crawler Carl_. That's almost definitely unfair, but from a distance everything about it just shouts "creatively bankrupt attempt to Westernize the kind of zero-stakes power fantasy light novel plots Japanese publishers have churned out for years".

You know that one thing - a show, book, game, something - the one that acquaintances are convinced you'll love but you've never really cared to look into? And when you do you're hit with a gross sense of foreboding because all of the reviews and thematic tropes point to an archetype you _despise_?

Gordo @gallowglass.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It's a bit sketchy for gold nibs, that's for sure. I don't think you'd have much to worry about with steel ones though.

It is a little funny to think that I knew about and desperately wanted to try out this odd hobby many years before I had an opportunity to try #D&D itself - if only because my parents successfully distracted me from the "devil game" for a while by swapping it with #Battletech.

Slightly less goofy reason: I was left alone in bookstores and libraries for hours on end, as was the parenting style of the time. Somewhere between discovering dog-eared copies of 1e supplements I barely understood and crates full of old Dragon issues, I was hooked.

I found a set of abandoned dice at an library and took them home - the curse was thus passed to me.

Overall I am really happy with how the campaign is going, and in the next session or two I'll start introducing the PoD adventure scenarios. We're only getting the opportunity to play about once a month right now, but at 5 hours a session it's probably fine.

It's going to be interesting to see how this experience sets the players' expectations - the only bit of difficulty the players had was the PC who boarded the target ship nearly tossed himself into the void when his player rolled snake-eyes on a ZeroG check. #ttrpg

Last night's #Traveller session went really well. We're running Pirates of Drinax and the characters played out the first naval encounter while hiding in the shadow of a local gas giant. A botched morale check on the target's side resulted in an abrupt mutiny, ending the encounter rather quickly.

Guy who's like "I can't play scenarios with pregens, I can't play systems that impose restrictions on my creative freedom, if you don't let me play literally any character I want you're gatekeeping me", then the product of that unfettered freedom is always a rigorously core-book-legal D&D character.

this is, unfortunately, exactly how it works. Safety is often boring, mundane, trivial things like observation of boundaries and monitoring the world around you. What people prefer (especially men) is tidy, clean instances of heroically swinging in and punching out a bad guy.

If the obstacles are minor, why are the players rolling against them in the first place? An assumption of basic competency for the PCs makes a game run so much more smoothly and eliminates this kind of headache.

I'd have to ask what "too much fun" means contextually here. I've had people tell me to my face that the kinds of TTRPGs I enjoy the most 'can't be fun' for a number of reasons, so this kind of feels like the opposite of that?

I am *dying* to get a chance to be a player again; the Sunday group I'd been playing with for almost 5 years dissolved due to availability issues and I'm struggling to find a replacement - especially *in person* local games. VTTs just aren't cutting it for me these days. #ttrpg

Meanwhile, I've tried to start up a Pirates of Drinax campaign for #Traveller with my home group. Getting together on the weekend has been more challenging than it ever has been, though I fully admit that's a me problem half the time. It has been great to see how enthusiastic my friends have been.

Things have been pretty quiet on the #TTRPG side. I spent the first half of the year running an open table campaign at a local game store using OSE; that was a pretty successful experiment for a while, but by June it had died down to just two consistent players. We're on hiatus at the moment.

I've been pretty busy back in the analog world, and I've spent a lot of time learning to balance the good with the bad. My health has taken a pretty severe hit in the past year but I'm on the mend; at the same time my job has changed substantially as I have jumped from a Logistics team job to IT.

If you made a list of things that could be done to make Battletech better as a game and setting, "make it more like 40K" wouldn't be at the bottom of it. It would be on another sheet of paper in a garbage can down the block, covered in old coffee and pizza grease. BT Gothic looks like a bad joke.

Looks like I survived the last round of layoffs, but the messaging from management definitely reads like a threat. "Oh we're done with the Reduction in Force, *unless* we fail to hit every one of our goals for the next three months." In other words, everyone is on probation.

I think I may have finally burned out on making custom settings for my TTRPG campaigns. As fun as it is to get lost in world-building, it's difficult to replicate the level of group buy-in that you can get with players who are already fans of the setting.

I wonder if this is how they're bringing Deathwatch back, in the same way that Imperium Maledictum is somewhat a new take on Dark Heresy. Also what's up with them releasing an Old World RPG, as if Warhammer Fantasy RPG doesn't already exist?
