Got a proper fairy ring of Yellow-Orange Fly Amanita growing in the yard. Apparently the kind of mushroom that gets you high, and gives you dysphoria? Nevertheless, choosing to take the ring as a blessing for my interview later this week.

As with other Amanita muscaria, the formosa variety contains ibotenic acid, and muscimol, two psychoactive constituents which can cause effects such as hallucinations, synaesthesia, euphoria, dysphoria and retrograde amnesia. The effects of muscimol and ibotenic acid most closely resemble that of a Z drug, like Ambien at high doses, and not a classical psychedelic, i.e. psilocybin.

Ibotenic acid is mostly broken down into the body to muscimol, but what remains of the ibotenic acid is believed to cause the majority of dysphoric effects of consuming A. muscaria mushrooms. Ibotenic acid is also a scientifically important neurotoxin used in lab research as a brain-lesioning agent in mice.

Taking a course on renewable energy has had the side effect of giving me a lot of neat ideas for letting players engineer modular power systems in Gremlin Game.

Solar cooking, boiling, distillation, and even smelting is possible. ~20-40% efficient.

Hydroelectric power runs constantly, though it is affected seasonally by flow or freezes/drought. It gets its power from Flow (rate and volume of water moving through) and Head (how far it falls between intake to turbine). This makes it more dependent on conditions like location. Water is denser and yields higher energy production, and also requires relatively simple technology. ~50-75% efficient. Intake is the most maintenance-intensive (clogging, etc)

Wind power needs to be far above ground to avoid turbulence, and must be built to match the expected wind speed for good efficiency, but scales exponentially with wind speed and rotor size. It thrives in areas with inclement weather and harder-to-control conditions, so its equipment needs more maintenance.

Geothermal power is the best for capturing heat for direct use in industrial processes (from hot springs, thermal vents, etc). Can be used to boil water for steam generators. Ground source heat exchange can be used anywhere to stabilize temperatures (use ground as heatsink or heat source) as long as exchanger is buried below frost line for that climate.

Bioenergy extracts energy as part of the decomposition process of biomass. Can be processed into biofuel/biogas, natural gas can be captured from anaerobic decomposition, ethanol from plant matter, and burning agricultural waste (feces, chaff, etc)

Hydrogen Fuel Cells (and Natural Gas Fuel Cells) can synthesize combustible gas using a source of..."

I hope you can find a solution to this. I've been in similar-feeling situations, so I can sympathize. Could you line up some work that doesn't have the same problems, then leave? I know it's not always easy to save the energy to look for new jobs, but if it's this bad, it sounds worth the effort.

Technically I listened to "Love in Exile" as read by the author, but I quite liked it. Good mix of anecdotes from a hetero trans woman's perspective, and theory about how love manifests in the society we've built. Still thinking about her words on self love, and how I bond with people. Good read!
