That's the basis of the story, Zul'jara is looking to the future of her people, Zul'jan the past, and Liadrin is someone deeply affected by that past who is willing to move on

Idk if it's desperate to paint as a villain. Zul'jan is trying to live up to a legacy he wasn't around for. Zul'jin was just someone he heard about and never met, he never learned of the atrocities he did in the name of the Amani, he only knew of the Loa as something that abandoned his people.

I'm not the most versed on directly post sundering lore but zul'jin was most definitely a villain. His characterization in 12.1 is that of someone who sacrificed his people and heritage. He was ready to genocide early human civilization and was a troll supremacist.

The film is written, directed, and co-stars Hitoshi Ozawa, a legendary Yakuza actor who is a villain in Yakuza 0, who got his fellow legends involved. This was his passion project inspired by one of his best friends, a trans woman, and he worked with the community for representative casting.
