As we expected: the wealthy few like Microsoft's Brad Smith and the big corporations who Amy Walen has been doing the bidding of are now dumping money behind her. They want to defeat progressive Jessica Forsythe so they can keep rigging the system to lower our wages & cut their taxes.
We've seen money from the business lobby ride to Walen's support before and it didn't go well. Last year, in a special election for the Senate seat in the 48th, business groups spent nearly $350K in support of Walen's challenge to Sen. Vandana Slatter, D-Bellevue, who had been appointed to the seat over Walen after Patty Kuderer was elected Insurance Commissioner. Slatter won by nearly 18 percentage points.

The WA GOP is running scared in the 35th LD after Dem Carolina Mejia came within 1,000 votes of beating incumbent MAGA Republican Drew MacEwen in the primary. MacEwen is being bankrolled by big corporations hoping to buy this seat and keep raising our costs and suppressing wages for working people.
A screenshot of a news article, with photos of Thurston County Commissioner Carolina Mejia and Sen. Drew MacEwen.

"WA Wins, the PAC controlled by the Senate GOP leadership, has spent more than $160,000 opposing Mejia in recent days. We're told the messaging targets various tax and fee increases imposed by the county council in recent years. We haven't seen the campaign yet, but it includes cable TV, radio, and online components, per the PAC's filing with the Public Disclosure Commission. The money comes almost entirely from players in the lobby, although the biggest donor is the national GOPAC Election Fund, which is a Republican bench-building effort."

Working people are already struggling with the cost of healthcare after MAGA Republicans raised prices with their Billionaire tax cut bill. Now the MAGA regime wants to kick people off care entirely, no doubt using AI like they did here in WA. bsky.app/profile/wash...

The wealthy few backing Brian Heywood's disastrous initiatives are trying to give a huge tax cut to their own small club while gutting education & childcare for working people across the state, including in rural areas where hardly anyone will pay at all. Vote NO on all three statewide initiatives!
A map of WA legislative districts is shown, color-coded by how many people in each with pay the new Millionaires Tax. 90% of the districts are light green color, showing very few people would pay, while the wealthiest couple of districts in the Bellevue area are a darker green, indicating that around ~2k people there would pay.

Connect the dots: conservative Democrat #WALeg Rep. Amy Walen votes against the historic Millionaires Tax to make free school meals & lower sales tax possible, then gets huge $$ from the big corporations trying to dodge paying what they owe in taxes. open.substack.com/pub/washingt...
Walen, D-Kirkland, was a lonely voice earlier this year in the House Democratic caucus against enacting an income tax on the state’s highest earners. She also mounted an expensive and contentious campaign last year for the Senate seat in the 48th against fellow Democrat Vendana [sic] Slatter, who had been appointed to the seat over Walen.

Walen, in turn, is drawing substantial support from two business-back PACs, Citizens For Progress, part of the Enterprise Washington network; and the Jackson Legacy Fund, which supports business-friendly Democrats. Both groups deployed significant chunks of the business lobby’s money last year in Walen’s failed bid for the Senate.

Statement from Reiny Cohen, Co-Interim Executive Director, Fuse Washington:
"Brian Heywood is at it again - using his fortune to run another ballot initiative so he can get out of paying what he truly owes in taxes. This initiative robs funding for the schools where our kids learn, makes health care more expensive, and raises taxes on everyday Washingtonians just so Brian and his rich friends can stay rich. But we see right through him. When he tried this two years ago he lost spectacularly, and he will lose again."

The wealthy few who fight to keep from having to pay what they owe in taxes (& the WA GOP politicians they donate to) keep seeing their spin fall apart as taxes on them continue breaking records. The evidence is in: rebalancing our tax code works, giveaways to the richest 1% don't.
screenshot of column by Seattle Times Columnist Danny Westneat: "That conundrum that keeps happening with the rich is happening again.

They are said to be leaving this state. Yet collections for a tax on wealth have smashed records — again.

For all the attention on this subject, Washington state has only one new wealth-related levy up and running (a new income tax is still two years away). But the capital gains tax debuted in 2023. It taxes not extreme wealth but profits made from selling assets, mostly stocks (real estate sales are excluded).

To pay this 7% tax you first have to book personal profits north of $278,000 — a windfall so rarefied it has blessed fewer than 10,000 Washingtonians each year.

So what just happened? The state’s chief economist reports that the latest returns have blown the roof off.

“This morning we got the updated numbers for fiscal year 2026 for capital gains … it came in at $1.5 billion,” economist Dave Reich told state lawmakers earlier this month. “So a very significant increase, quite a bit above our forecast from what we had before.”"

The MAGA regime loves inflation because it cuts working people's real wages while leaving the wall street profits of their billionaire donors unscathed. Trump takes bribes, starts illegal wars, and we all pay the price.
Chart showing real wages during Trump's 2nd term. All growth has been completely reversed in the last 5 months.

Author Lu Hill in Spokane lays out just how transformative the funding from the Millionaires Tax will be for a working family, showing how all of these investments help put food on the table and build a better life. Read Hill's latest column here: www.spokesman.com/stories/2026...
Parents will also see additional benefits from the millionaires tax. For example, a working mother who has a toddler and a school-age child and who earns $65,000 a year will no longer be charged sales tax on diapers, baby wipes and other supplies, saving her more than $200 each year. The millionaires tax will make all school meals free, which saves this mom another $1,300 in annual food costs for the school-age child. At the same time, the millionaires tax will preserve funding for the Working Connections Child Care program, which allows this parent to access programs and benefits that will save the family over $30,000 a year in childcare costs.

[Extremely loud incorrect buzzer sound]
Financing for the agency primarily comes from the city’s 5 percent corporate tax on payrolls in excess of $1 million. Last year, it brought in $134 million for SSHD, more than the 2.5 times initial projections.
