The group (Sekhaa/sekeha) is Gong Dharma Kusuma Pinda. They had a legendary music battle with another gong kebyar group from Geledag in 1963 or ‘64.. two of the best groups in Bali, but Geledag is no longer active.

All in all, just … not a fan of the way this evolved. Seems like a bait and switch, and it sucks because the main character is still awesome, but the flavor is just oversalted with hollywood actionisms and appeals to emotion. I guess my qualm is with the script, not the IP. meh.

Exhibit 4: The Conveniently an Orphan / Parental Abandonment tropes that seem sort of tacked on here, where in the previous series they weren’t necessary; I can’t put my finger on it, but it seems pretty pander-y. Neagley could continue to be solid and mysterious without them.

Exhibit 3: One that always bugs me, the forced romantic narrative. Does Neagley really need to have a romantic interest to make this season complete? Do supporting characters also need to pair off? Maybe it helps w/ resolution of the storyline, but I don’t really see it. Maybe I’m just a grumpus?

Exhibit 1: The LSD mind control trope. Somehow this one made it through the script without even casual mention of MKULTRA. Don’t question a trip 30 minutes in duration. Helpful: depiction of Neagley easily recovering. Unhelpful: autopsies showing hallucinogens w/ classically short half lives.
