More broadly, our findings extend the role of the claustrum beyond cortical-state regulation. It may provide a route through which distributed cortical dynamics are coordinated with hippocampal output during sleep, with consequences for memory consolidation.

This motif is distributed across prefrontal cortex, retrosplenial cortex and subiculum, and is accompanied by transient changes in coherence, gamma-burst synchrony, phase alignment and directed interactions.

We then activated this pathway during post-learning sleep. Behaviorally: memory consolidation improves. Physiologically: a highly stereotyped network motif appears: a brief gamma-rich Up state, followed by a coordinated Down state.

We turned to a population of claustral neurons projecting to the subicular complex, a major hippocampal output node. These neurons are strongly recruited during slow-wave sleep, and their endogenous activity is organized around coordinated cortical and subicular Up/Down states.

A few years ago, with Jesse Jackson and colleagues, we found that the claustrum can shape cortical dynamics during NREM sleep and promote memory consolidation. doi.org/10.1016/j.ce... That left us wondering: does its role during sleep extend beyond the cortex?

Claustral pathway coordinates distributed cortical dynamics with hippocampal output during sleep to promote memory consolidation
The claustrum is a broadly connected subcortical structure proposed to coordinate distributed cortical activity. Claustral neurons are recruited during synchronized brain states and contribute to slee...

How does the brain build a memory? A common assumption is that the neurons activated during an experience collectively form the memory engram. In our new Nature Neuroscience paper (finally out!), we show that this is not the case. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Deconstruction of a memory engram reveals distinct ensembles recruited at learning - Nature Neuroscience
Pouget et al. identified distinct CA1 neuron ensembles active during specific moments of fear learning and uncovered the core engram essential for memory formation.

It’s out! 🎉 My thesis research conducted in @funsycnrs.bsky.social team at @unistra.fr in collaboration with @cnrs.fr is published. Using new #EEG metrics, we show how #brain #dynamics are altered in early #Alzheimer’s & how 40 Hz visual #stimulation (vGENUS) can restore them and boost #memory. 🧠💡

40 Hz light stimulation restores early brain dynamics alterations and associative memory in Alzheimer's disease model mice
Abstract. Visual gamma entrainment using sensory stimuli (vGENUS) is a promising non-invasive therapeutic approach for Alzheimer's disease (AD), showing efficacy in improving memory function. However,...

How does the brain integrate information from new experiences while preserving established memories? Have a look at our latest preprint, "Experience reorganizes content-specific memory traces in macaques" 🧵 🧪🧠🤖👩‍🔬 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Experience reorganizes content-specific memory traces in macaques
