Despite the vastness of Sol's orbits, one can still find shining bastions of civilization in their midst. New Appalachia is one of such shining cities. See alt text for lore.
New Appalachia was first settled in 2062 during the start of the Solar Frontier era. Initially known as 1036 Ganymed, it is around 22 miles in diameter, being selected by the Columbia program as an early point of settlement due to its orbit between Terra and Mars. After being towed into a cycler orbit between the two worlds, it experienced immense growth as countless pioneers flooded to its orbit.

After over 2 centuries of habitation, it has a population of nearly 45 million in the year 2278, dwarfing its namesake. Despite this however it remains true to its namesake in many ways, having rather large nature preserves within its volume. Whether spin or micrograv, its communities, flora, and fauna are as diverse as they are interesting, one being able to live and die within its volume without feeling as though they hadn't seen much in their lifetime. Exotic GeneMods combined with their love for all things horror and supernatural, a number of themed preserves allow one to go cryptid hunting, the dreams of man's past brought into his present.

Outside of its rich cultural history, New Appalachia also is quite the industrial powerhouse. On, in, and around it numerous additive manufacturing plants churn out goods whether they be clothing, pharmaceuticals, biologicals, cybernetics, electronics, spacecraft, furniture, or anything in between. Its orbital ring, nicknamed "The Iron Cradle" is especially well known for its high quality shipbuilding, using multiple proprietary manufacturing techniques to punch well above its weight. Numerous spires rising out of the asteroid's surface also enable even the largest vessels to dock safely with it.

Governance wise, New Appalachia is a tight knit elected republic, with corporations, coops, communities, government entities, and churches working together in a rather complex dance which holds itself together through cultural inertia and the people's faith in their system.

wreathed in glitter and gold
A 3D render. Earth is seen from a far vantage point in space, set against a pure black void. It's lit in crescent, sunlight reflecting brightly off the western Pacific ocean. Its night side is illuminated by the yellow-white lights of cities in India, Central Asia, and Africa. Miniscule pinpricks of white light surround the planet—orbital satellites and habitats, seen from afar. A dense shell hugs the planet closely, tapering off to a sparse cloud at the higher altitudes. An orderly ring stretches to either side of the image at geostationary height, made up of twenty-four larger, brighter dots, spaced evenly, among numerous smaller ones. The Moon is visible in the background, dark side populated by its own constellation of city lights. Another ring of twelve bright dots surrounds it.

These are what the clouds on Jupiter look up close. The small patches of white are cloud tops, soaring above the main, colourful cloud layer. Image from NASA's Juno spacecraft during its 38th close approach to Jupiter on 29 November 2021, processed by Kevin Gill (@kevinmgill.bsky.social)
A complex, swirling pattern of lighter and darker clouds. One large system, angled to the upper left in this scene, is a tawny brown colour and is elongate. Another, more circular storm system is at lower centre, and is a grey–greenish colour. The background swirls are various shades of grey to blue; small, white features dot the scene.

machine that makes wormholes #art
Infographic showing a strange rounded metallic object with three protrusions extending from it. Each protrusion features a hole that retreats into darkness. The surface of the object is scratched and covered in strange ciruclar winding dents and grooves.

To the right is an image depicting that same object glowing blue-hot, a thin glowing beam rushing into the larger of the three holes it posesses.

In the bottom left is a simple illustraion of a woman with long hair holding the object on the tip of her finger.

There's a lot of text that unfortunately doesn't fit in the character limit here, but the gist of it goes as follows:
- This object takes in large amounts of mass and spits out a non-orientable wormhole.
- The object is 7 millimetres in diameter but weighs 112 billion tons.
- It is reflective to basically all light and is nearly indestructible.
- How it produces wormholes is unknown. During operation the machine exceeds temperatures of 100,000 kelvin.
- The wormholes it produces are less than a millimetre in size. Due to being non-orientable wormholes they turn matter passing through them into antimatter, and vice versa.

i've been mostly supporting myself by donating plasma twice a week, but with surgery leadup and recovery, that hasn't been an option for a few weeks, and i'll be deferred until the end of the year. i don't expect i can make up for $110/week, but every lil bit helps thank you 💜

problem is I'm not really sure how to get the middle joiner bit open on just one side... might have to just cut all 3 ends and put it solder it back together from scratch
