For no particular reason, I'm thinking this morning about the story in the Bible about how King Nebuchadnezzar set up a massive golden idol of himself and eventually had all his power stripped away from him and went feral in the desert for seven years

I don't know if it is yet out for streaming or on DVD, but you should watch it!!! Paddington is so precious! The only thing I didn't care for in this movie is they swapped out the actress for Mrs. Brown, which is a pity because I loved Sally Hawkins!

hahahaha, totally! As a writer who burns the midnight oil, I always get shamed by friends for this, but I genuinely have a nocturnal lifestyle, sleep later into the mornings, out of necessity, etc. because of family circumstances.

This is in a nutshell why "Christian" nationalism is not Christian. Because it prioritises some city of earth over the city of God, which is universal and free to people of every tribe and tongue.

Basically, I am learning to expand my critical view by looking at world literature, works seen through translation and the lens of other cultures, and what is lost and gained through a text's translatability or intranslatability...

if the writing moves one so deeply, surely there must be some aesthetic quality that is worthy to take seriously?

Joy Chalaby @fullnessofjoy16.bsky.social · 31/01/2025
But with all due respect to Hemingway's brilliance, why should Hemingway (among dozens of other big Anglophone writers in the 1910s and 1920s) make this argument about Dostoevsky's "bad writing", if he goes on to praise the spirit of his work and its impact?

I love that my thesis research, examining an author in translation and his reception, has challenged me to see the ideological weapons deployed in creating assumptions about aesthetics, art, and value. See this quote by Hemingway on Dostoevsky:

Yes, that would be truly frustrating. I think developing healthy boundaries of respect is essential as well to developing the teacher-student dynamics. Hope you find a way through this challenge!

agreed! Ugh! Also, he wasn't very well-developed. Very cardboard-cut-out character—he's just a cliche webtoon character created by her troubled dad! I found Extraordinary You a good one for exploring (a little) this metatextual concept but in a sweeter way with 2 absolute cinnamon rolls for MCs!

I watched that whole kdrama and I liked the female lead, but hated the male lead! "gutted with a butter knife" - yep!

My dad is a medical doctor, and his patients come to his office, addressing him, "hey what's up, mate?" which makes him (quite rightfully) annoyed. In the US, I'm sure it is a very different dynamic where there is less casual egalitarianism and more expectations around respecting professions.

That is so interesting. In Australia, academics mostly encourage their students to dispense with titles when talking to/emailing them. Jennifer was Jenny, Margaret was Marg... forget Dr or Professor! So I don't have expectations of being called Dr when I get my PhD other than filling out forms 🫠😅

Apologies, I never responded! I forgot all about bsky these past months, forgetting to check notifications or comments. I'm focusing on Dostoevsky's influence on Anglophone writers, so looking at multiple texts by Dostoevsky, where relevant!

I inserted a line from T.S. Eliot's "the waste land" in my thesis chapter draft on Dostoevsky, and I suddenly feel like I am on cloud nine and getting nostalgic flashbacks to my undergrad days writing my essay on this masterpiece of a poem.

but overall, I was surprised and disappointed by just how, well... boring this movie was. Give me Toy Story over barbie ANY day!

Joy Chalaby @fullnessofjoy16.bsky.social · 21/01/2024
also the set design - and at the beginning when barbie is in her dream house, "eating" & "drinking" fake food *was* nostalgic - I didn't own a barbie, but I played with barbie accessories (not Ken) and incoperated them in my Playmobil and Steffi doll playtime.

I did enjoy a few things about it - the subtle reference to the Garden of Eden, death and shame in Barbie's "awakening", the cultural references...

I just watched Barbie and it is the most vanilla, squeaky-clean version of feminism I have seen in a long time. No wonder my parents never let me play Barbie when I was growing up.

OK, but why do Dostoevsky's female characters deal with love the way Taylor Swift's songs do?

I have been silent on social media lately, just because I have found it hard to speak or write. The things I want to say... well, I feel like I can only pray about right now or talk to others in person, and sharing lightly about the other stuff feels a bit frivolous at the moment
