Why do some calls require *letters* of recommendation for *all* applicants? 100s of people apply for these postings. Save us all some time. Names of references are sufficient to apply for a call. Request full letters only for individuals moving on to second or third-round interviews....

Now in it's 16th season, the show claims to represent "real reality" and provide audiences with a glimpse of what it means to be a true Cajun. In a new paper co-authored by Courtlyn Pippert (not only Bluesky), we show how this image favors "dudeology" over accurate representation.

A long time ago, I did ethnographic work inside the Bayous of Louisiana with professional alligator hunters. I stayed with a team of hunters on their houseboat, watched how they did their work, and shot a gun. This was during the height of #SwampPeople - a longstanding show on the History Channel.

Thrilled to have this opportunity to study as a Distinguished Professor at University of Tübingen🇩🇪 this summer. I am struck by the walkability of the town (no car needed for the month!), the inexpensive and extremely fresh produce, and the access to outstanding public resources. Feeling grateful 💕

This makes sense. Many of my colleagues from abroad express fear of traveling to the U.S. right now. Unfortunately, more and more U.S. scholars are no longer able to travel internationally to disseminate our research because our grants have been frozen or cancelled.

Thinking about devastating cuts to NSF: US gov-funded science has been the engine upon which most of the tech wealth was generated. But the oligarchs (currently hoarding much of that $) think it’s their own brilliance & not the accident of standing close to the scientific engine that made them rich.

Seven - by encouraging people to "do their own research" it creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. When people put together their own furniture they value it more (the IKEA effect) - conservative elites use this same strategy for information seeking (i.e. "the IKEA Effect of Misinformation").
713230
Francesca Tripodi @ftripodi.bsky.social · 04/01/2025
Sixth - most propaganda conservative elites rely on are decades old ideas wrapped up in new influencer packaging. Engaging with these "deep stories" helps make these ideas sick (e.g. "stop the steal" is from the era of reconstruction - W.E.B. Du Bois)
29814
Francesca Tripodi @ftripodi.bsky.social · 04/01/2025
Fifth - conservative elites understand the power of search. they create phrases unique to their media environment (what I call "keyword curation") and spread it through their media system described above (what I call "strategic signaling").
29418
Francesca Tripodi @ftripodi.bsky.social · 04/01/2025
Fourth - search engines shape our reality. much focus is placed on how social media spreads disinformation, but search engines facilitate finding new information. What people don't understand is that it can reflect our own (and societal) biases. My new work explains how AI search makes this worse.
210518
Francesca Tripodi @ftripodi.bsky.social · 04/01/2025
Third - those who embody conservativism engage in a different kind of media literacy. "Scriptural Inference" is a form of media engagement learned through Bible study - it emphasizes a direct engagement with sacred texts. Elites have used this method to leverage other forms of text deemed sacred.

Francesca Tripodi @ftripodi.bsky.social · 04/01/2025
Second - conservative elites have built an media empire around the 5Fs - this interconnected web of information reinforces this drumbeat through radio, print, social media, podcasts, email alerts, and television.
28516
Francesca Tripodi @ftripodi.bsky.social · 04/01/2025
First - conservatism is different from republicanism, but republican pundits and politicians have done an incredible job at merging the two. Elites have brought together otherwise disparate groups around the "5 Fs" - Faith, Family, Forces, Firearms, Free Market
