Don't miss Simon's experiment with asking Claude's new free tier to draw a WebGL version of "Pelican on a bike": -> static.simonwillison.net/static/2026/... "Solid effort" is an understatement IMHO, especially for "free" (this may eat a considerable amount of "free" 5h allowance).
The most interesting thing about Sonnet 5.5 is that it's now the model used for the free tier on claude.ai. OpenAI's ChatGPT free tier uses Luna 5.6, which means Anthropic currently have a much more capable free offering.

I ran this prompt against that free tier:

build me an HTML page that renders a three-dimensional pelican riding a bicycle using WebGL

And got back this page, which is a solid effort.

For dumb people like me who see such a dredger for the first time ->
AI Overview The "Atlant" refers to a prominent backhoe dredger (BHD) operating primarily in European and Russian waterways.Key Technical SpecificationsVessel Type: Backhoe Dredger (BHD) / Non-self-propelled DredgerFlag: RussiaOperational Status: ActivePrimary Applications: Deepening and maintaining maritime navigation channels, port development, and shore protection. It has recently been deployed for heavy dredging campaigns in critical areas such as the Ust-Luga terminal (Port Favor) in Russia.Understanding Backhoe DredgersUnlike Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHDs) that vacuum up loose sediment while moving, a backhoe dredger like the Atlant is equipped with a massive, heavy-duty hydraulic excavator boom mounted onto a stationary pontoon or barge platform. How it works: It uses high-capacity mechanical buckets to dig into hard, compact seabed layers, clay, or boulder-ridden soils that hydraulic suction pipes cannot easily break apart.Disposal: The excavated material is excavated and directly transferred onto split-hopper barges moored alongside the dredger to be carried away for disposal or land reclamation.

It has been half a month since I started a new role at a big company. Nobody knows anything here. The specs, code, tests, PRDs, tickets, resolution of those tickets, reports, etc., everything is made by Claude Code. Nobody on my team likes this. They are being forced to ship as much as they can. I have heard multiple times from higher management that pushing code is not a bottleneck, so why are we slow? People are working 12 to 13 hours a day just to press enter. Nobody is reading anything. Everyone, literally everyone, from an L1 to an L7 engineer here is doing the same thing. Talk to Claude.

That is an absolute marathon of a code review. Reading the Architecture Decision Record (ADR) and walking through a 69-commit stack in chronological order takes serious diligence and mental stamina.

You have the full context of how the architecture evolved and why choices were made. How would you like to proceed with the stack?

Let me know if you want to:
- Discuss any architectural red flags or deviations from the ADR
- Draft a high-level summary of feedback for the author
- Align on specific commits that looked problematic or need refactoring

What is your immediate goal for this review?

For dumb people, like me (also, thanks Gemini) ->
The post is a piece of satirical macro-finance commentary posted by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf (Speaker of the Iranian Parliament) aimed at mocking the US Federal Reserve's interest rate policy.

The underlying point is that central banks cannot solve physical supply shocks or energy chokepoints with monetary policy.

**The Standard Taylor Rule Context**

In monetary economics, John Taylor's original **Taylor Rule** provides a formula for how central banks should set their nominal short-term target interest rate ($i$):
$$i = r^* + \pi^* + 1.5(\pi - \pi^*) + 0.5(y - y^*)$$

* $i$: Target short-term interest rate set by the central bank.
* $r^*$: Neutral real interest rate.
* $\pi$: Current rate of inflation.
* $\pi^*$: Target rate of inflation (typically 2%).
* $(\pi - \pi^*)$: Inflation gap (how far inflation is above or below target).
* $(y - y^*)$: Output gap (real GDP output relative to potential capacity).**Breakdown of the Modified "Straits Taylor Rule" Formula**

The screenshot modifies the standard formula by introducing two geopolitical energy variables:

$$i = r^* + \pi^* + 1.5(\pi - \pi^*) + 0.5(y - y^*) + \alpha(\text{SOH} - \text{SOH}^*) + \beta(\text{BEM} - \text{BEM}^*)$$

* **$\text{SOH} - \text{SOH}^*$**: The disruption gap in the **Strait of Hormuz** (a critical global transit route for oil).
* **$\text{BEM} - \text{BEM}^*$**: The disruption gap in **Bab-el-Mandeb** (the Red Sea oil and maritime bottleneck).
* **$\alpha, \beta > 0$**: Weight coefficients indicating that shipping disruptions at these chokepoints directly force interest rates higher due to geopolitical energy inflation.Context and Key References**

* **"You can't 25bp a chokepoint"**: Central banks routinely adjust interest rates in increments of 25 basis points (0.25%). The text mocks the idea that tweaking interest rates can clear a physical blockade or generate physical oil.
* **"$r^*$ isn't neutral. It's SOH risk premium, and We set it"**: Redefines the theoretical neutral interest rate ($r^*$) as a physical risk premium controlled by those who dictate access to the Strait of Hormuz, rather than central bankers.
* **"Stay unanchored!"**: Sarcastic play on the central bank objective of keeping consumer "inflation expectations anchored". It implies that when physical logistics break down, inflation expectations will naturally become unanchored regardless of interest rate hikes.

Apparently not -> simonwillison.net/2026/Sep/12/...
The thing that bothers me most about this incident is that the authors report that OpenAI had not disclosed to RubyGems that they were responsible for the attack prior to now. If that’s true there are two options:

After the Hugging Face and Wiki attacks OpenAI were still unable to review their previous logs and determine that they had previously attacked RubyGems.
They knew about the attack on RubyGems and made the decision not to reach out to the RubyGems team about it.

Both of these are bad!

Given this incident, the Hugging Face situation, and the Wiki attack, the obvious question right now is how many more incidents like this are out there waiting to be discovered?

Any Nix package, live in your browser (via) Farid Zakaria calls this his "magnum opus of Nix work", and I can see why.

trynix.dev provides a qemu-wasm powered x86_64 Linux virtual machine running entirely in your browser through WebAssembly. That VM can then be booted with any Nix package from the past 13 years. They are URL addressable, so you can navigate to this page:

https://trynix.dev/?pkg=python3%403.6.2

Then click "Load" and get an interactive shell against a virtual machine running Python 3.6.2 from 2017.

Farid is building all sorts of neat things on top of this. One recent example: Review a pull request by booting it introduces trynix-preview, described like this:

GitHub action that comments a link on a pull request which lets you boot the PR’s build in the browser using https://trynix.dev. No servers, just browsers.

Boot any package nixpkgs ever shipped, in this tab. Pick a package and a version from 13 years of nixpkgs history; its closure is fetched from cache.nixos.org into an x86_64 Linux virtual machine (QEMU compiled to WebAssembly) and you get a shell with the package on PATH. Nothing runs on a server.

For the uninitiated (like me, also thanks Gemini) ->
This equation represents a complex-valued parametric function $z(t)$, which traces out a 2D path in the complex plane (often used to construct Fourier transform animations, complex epicycles, or artistic curve-drawing algorithms like those popularized by 3Blue1Brown).

$$z(t) = \sum_{k} \frac{e^{i q_k t}}{q_k}$$Breakdown of Components

$z(t)$: A point in the complex plane at time $t$, where the real part corresponds to the $x$-coordinate and the imaginary part corresponds to the $y$-coordinate.

$\sum_{k}$: A summation over a discrete set of integer frequencies or indices, $k$.

$e^{i q_k t}$: A rotating complex exponential representing a vector in the complex plane with a constant length of $1$. As $t$ progresses, this vector rotates counterclockwise (or clockwise if $q_k < 0$) at an angular frequency of $q_k$.

$q_k$: The frequency (or wave number) associated with the $k$-th mode.

$\frac{1}{q_k}$: The amplitude and scaling factor for the $k$-th term. Higher frequencies ($\vert{}q_k\vert{} \gg 1$) have smaller radii ($\frac{1}{\vert{}q_k\vert{}}$), while lower frequencies dominate the main shape of the path. The presence of the imaginary unit factor or sign within $q_k$ also introduces a phase shift/rotation to each term.Physical & Geometric Interpretation

1. Epicycles (Circles on Circles): Each term $\frac{e^{i q_k t}}{q_k}$ acts as a rotating circle vector attached to the tip of the previous vector. As $t$ increases, the tip of the final combined vector draws out a smooth, intricate path $z(t)$.

2. Fourier Representation: This is a specific form of a complex Fourier series expansion where the coefficient amplitudes are inversely proportional to their respective frequencies $q_k$.

3. Integration Context: Since $\int e^{i q_k t} \, dt = \frac{e^{i q_k t}}{i q_k} + C$, expressions of this form frequently arise when integrating periodic complex signals or solving differential equations governing oscillatory motion.

The researchers said the approach would still depend heavily on accurate detection and tracking, fire-control systems and programmable fuses, and suggested integrating the guns with electronic warfare, lasers and command-and-control systems.

But their proposal also faces opposition from China’s defence community, with one Chinese weapons and equipment specialist dismissing the study. “It is just a lousy paper written for promotion.”

The specialist, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of his affiliated institution and a potential conflict of interest, said he did not believe the paper provided convincing evidence that large-calibre guns would be effective against a drone swarm.

There seems to be a pipeline from this post by Jared Palmer (Devin/Cognition) ->
Jared Palmer (@jaredpalmer)

After about a ~decade with atomic CSS frameworks (BuzzFeed Solid, Basscss, and then finally Tailwind), I think I'm convinced now that Stylex is superior for agents.

Stylex constraints lead to greater consistency and correctness as your codebase grows. I do still think Tailwind is the ideal human DSL for styling, but in a world where I'm barely touching CSS/class names by hand, the tradeoffs have changed. Again, if I were still hand writing code, Tailwind still wins, but we're not doing that anymore.
