@nickofferman.bsky.social on the Daily Show you talked about Gen Z having little sex. You didn’t see the connection with them living with variants circulating of the airborne SARS virus that causes COVID. Repeat COVID is awful, and you can too easily share it with the ones you love. Gen Z is sick.

We are actually lucky Trump is so stupid and greedy he did not ban exports on diesel prior to the midterm elections. That would have helped Republicans in the midterms but then his oligarchs would have made less money off of American farmers and truckers.

Maybe not an apocalypse, per se ... @doctorow.pluralistic.net pluralistic.net/2025/09/27/e...
One of those questions came from a young man who said something like "So, you're saying a third of the stock market is tied up in seven AI companies that have no way to become profitable and that this is a bubble that's going to burst and take the whole economy with it?"

I said, "Yes, that's right."

He said, "OK, but what can we do about that?"

So I re-iterated the book's thesis: that the AI bubble is driven by monopolists who've conquered their markets and have no more growth potential, who are desperate to convince investors that they can continue to grow by moving into some other sector, e.g. "pivot to video," crypto, blockchain, NFTs, AI, and now "super-intelligence." Further: the topline growth that AI companies are selling comes from replacing most workers with AI, and re-tasking the surviving workers as AI babysitters ("humans in the loop"), which won't work. Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job. AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations:

This is a prime example of what @doctorow.pluralistic.net would term ‘criti-hype’. There are real damages from LLMs & genAI, e.g. the power & water used; how they’ve pushed up memory prices making phones, laptops etc more expensive; the trillions of $ wasted. But AI isn’t going to wipe out humans.

@doctorow.pluralistic.net is right. The safety scare is largely about inviting regulation that will lock out cheap competitors more than do anything for real 'safety,' like who has access to your prompts and under what terms? 1/3 pluralistic.net/2026/09/16/b...
This is a disaster all around: the AI companies are locked in a Red Queen's Race, a fatal beggar-thy-neighbor doom-loop. The only way they could escape that trap is by signing a nonaggression pact amongst themselves promising not to compete anymore. But there's two giant problems with this: first, it is incredibly, fantastically illegal under antitrust law, because it represents a conspiracy among the dominant players to cease to compete with one another, and; second, it leaves the field open for the further development of Chinese "open weight" models that customers can run on their own modest, low-powered computers, which are presently lagging the US "frontier models" by a mere four months:
