LOL. I am rarely on here, but I keep getting notifications that so-and-so has blocked me. 😂 I suspect it’s because they think “generative art” = “AI”, which to be fair I can’t blame them for because some AI artists use the term for their work. It just does seem excessive to hate AI that much. 🙄

Hey friends. Is video uploading broken on Bluesky? I keep trying and it doesn’t even look as if it makes any attempt. Just hangs. Am I doing it wrong? These are originally screen recordings from a Mac and I’m trying to upload from my iPhone. My network is fine AFAIK since everything else works.

It was anti-competitive regulations that killed it. The auto industry making sure it was illegal to drive them on the roads, and the sidewalks were already off-limits to vehicles (obnoxious cyclists notwithstanding). They still make them, but you can only ride them indoors or on private property.

Carney seems to be a “true believer” as evidenced by the fact we even *have* an “AI Minister”. I agreed with the previous government’s support for a center of excellence in AI. It worked. But using AI unwisely in government is going to burn us all.

NFTs encouraged speculation (a fancy word for gambling). It made a few artists wealthy but left most with nothing. When the gamblers left to play with meme coins, the whole blockchain art scene kind of died. Maybe it can be revived but probably not to the scale it was before.

True, “AI” for art does not imply off-the-shelf diffusion models (though there’s nothing wrong with them). Artists that write and/or train their own models must be equally frustrated with the “what prompt did you use?” thing, too.

I have nothing in general against NFTs for art, but there is a lot of trash on blockchains, that’s for sure. And it does give other artists a bad name. I don’t know a better way to pay digital artists for their work, though, especially for providing royalties on secondary sales. 🤷‍♀️

Also, just to be clear, when artists do use AI, it’s highly unlikely that all that’s involved is “a prompt”. Neither generative art nor AI art should be trivialized this way.

It’s quite depressing how many people believe “generative art” or “creative coding” or “algorithmic art” means “AI”. An artist can spend a year or more perfecting an algorithm & bashing out GPU shaders just to have someone ask them what “prompt” they used. Sigh. 😔
