My first ever casino poker experience was at the Taj and when I came back I told everyone that their poker chips were “the dirtiest objects I’ve ever touched.” INSANE how nasty they were

It is exactly the kind of idea a megalomaniac who is determined to put himself beyond the reach of all constraints and who owns a rocket company might have while on drugs and hey there whaddayaknow

@matt-levine.bsky.social is joking but I do wonder if this feature—“collateral cant be repoed if it is in outer space, thus putting it there gives me leverage”—could be driving the orbital data center thing. Musk has already defeated securities regs and shareholder democracy, why not the UCC too?

We need recall elections for senators so badly

If a sitter costs ~$120, your parent friends can’t get one very often. Since they can’t get one often, it’s a special occasion when they do. So if you invite them to something requiring a sitter, you’re kind of asking them to use a special occasion on you. It feels rude to ask that too frequently

Incredibly real. And it’s not just “parents don’t get sitters so it’s hard for them to say yes” it’s also that *everyone knows that* and so they hesitate to ask in the first place, bc inviting a parent to an event that would require them to get a sitter almost feels like an imposition

Guy who is part of a political movement led entirely by rapists, one of the main goals of which is to make rape even easier to accomplish and get away with: Being gay is as bad as being a rapist.

Gavin Newson sucks ass and it’s important people know that but let’s please not let the utterly dysfunctional California legislature—who have literally not overridden a governor’s veto since 1979–off the hook. Do your jobs.

The death penalty is a moral abomination. State-sanctioned barbarism pushed by incompetent morons and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. Absolute ghoul shit. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."

We gotta have recall elections for senators. 6 years is way too long for a politician to go without having to face voters

Trump 2 is the first administration in my lifetime that—in addition to being unbelievably corrupt itself—is openly, inarguably pro-corruption as a major policy position. It would be cool if this were covered with, oh, even like a quarter of the urgency that the “border crisis” did under the last guy

But to me, I think it’s worse than just corny. If the only way a guy can stomach being seen to perform “feminine” child care duties is by suffusing it with the imagery of not just masculinity but specifically *violent* masculinity, that Says Some Things About Him, None Of Them Good
110
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
The objection isn’t to masculinity. One of my friends’ diaper bag is black with brown leather details, it reads as very masculine! The objection is to a specifically military aesthetic, which is at very best corny as hell and thematically inappropriate (babies don’t belong with uniformed soldiers!)
110
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Counterpoint: it is actually really easy to find a normal diaper bag both a man and his wife will be just fine with, and if a man needs to cosplay like he’s deploying to Fallujah in order to take care of his baby that represents a psychological problem that should be fixed not indulged

This is a really important story. You know how over reliance on AI makes you lazy and stupid? This shows how that’s happening within the military — a military, it cannot be pointed out often enough, that’s growing ever more reliant on AI. The children of Shajarah Tayyebah Elementary paid the price

I’d stay away from Chelsea (until recently, a money laundering operation for its Russian kleptocrat owner), United (the PL’s Dallas Cowboys, meets at Zebra Club), and Tottenham (constantly miserable, meets at Zebra Club also) out of those. Arsenal’s bar is a good crowd, can’t speak to Liverpool
010
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
In that case: Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham all have supporters clubs that meet for games at specific Midtown bars; Liverpool has a club that meets at a bar in Arden.
110
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Threshold question: how much do you care about trying to see all their games? A PL team you can definitely do that, a Bundesliga team you’re gonna have to engage with some illegal streams or be OK with missing some big games, esp if you don’t pick Bayern Munich
110
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
In Bundesliga: Bayern Munich if you like a team that scores a lot of goals and smashes everyone they play and wins the title every year Dortmund, Leipzig, Frankfurt, or Leverkusen if you like to watch young talent develop
110
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
In the PL: Arsenal or Liverpool if you want a likeable club that can win big competitions and has a significant in-person fanbase in Sac Brentford, Bournemouth, or Brighton for an exciting underdog if you don’t care about seeing the team win trophies or the local fanbase bit

How often do you go for the wood rather than gas? And are you using the wood Gozney sells or sourcing your own? Thinking about getting one of these and trying to decide if the hybrid fuel ones are worth the upgrade

That’s the bar I’m looking at: can Vik play well enough that the manager feels he can give Kai meaningful rest during a stretch like that, where every opponent can hurt us and too many dropped points could really jeopardize our goals. Or do we just have to pray that Kai can hold up for it all?
010
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
There’s a stretch coming of 21 days where we play Newcastle(A), Dortmund(H), City(H), Brentford(A), Spurs(A), Real Madrid(H), Bournemouth(H). 7 straight tough, critical games, every 3 days, no breaks. Is Vik playing well enough to earn some starts and early subs in there? Or does Kai get run ragged?
110
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
It was a great pass! It was also almost literally his only involvement in the game. Is that enough?
100
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I’m not disregarding that at all. I think “will Kai be healthy” is directly related to “will the manager trust Kai’s backup to take important minutes off him.” The whole argument is whether Gyokeres is doing enough to earn that trust so we can hopefully have Kai when we need him.
100
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I think our best chance to be successful involves having Havertz healthy for the business end of the season, our best chance of that involves him getting rest earlier in the season, I worry that won’t happen if Arteta doesn’t trust his backup, and I’m not seeing the backup earning trust. Am I wrong?
100
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
That’s true! It’s also true that we won the league narrowly, with a low points total, with the fewest goals scored by a champion in 10 years, with no wins against City or Liverpool, and relying heavily on 1-0 victories against overmatched opponents. I want more, bc it may well take more to win again
200
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
The more 9-touch, 0-shot performances Vik puts up, the more the manager will feel he *has* to start Kai in *every* game that matters, and therefore the more likely Kai is to get injured again. We need a backup Arteta will use by choice, not only necessity. Is Vik that guy? If not, it’s a problem.
201
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I think the issue is that we’re concerned that he *cant* be Kai’s backup. We need to be able to rest Kai in PL and CL matches occasionally (in addition to the cups), and take him off at 60 minutes sometimes as well. Can Vik earn enough trust that the manager will be comfortable giving Kai that rest?
110
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
It’s on Vik to find a way to impress the manager in whatever minutes he gets, in order to convince the manager to give him more minutes. Kai has the shirt now, which means Vik needs to make it work with what he gets if he wants to change that. That’s the job of a pro athlete, simple as.
000
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I mean, that kind of is on him, no? If Kai is fit, that means there’s competition at ST, which means Vik is unlikely to have uninterrupted runs of starts even if he were to win that competition. We need a player who can make impact as a sub or in one-off starts. If Vik can’t, thats a problem.

On the “high production value expensive show” front too…it takes HBO 2 years to put out each HotD season, the same for The Last of Us…how does that kind of schedule mesh with actors who are supposed to be playing pre/teens the whole time? These kids will be 20 before the series is halfway done

My toddler loves old Looney Tunes cartoons but to your point I literally had to buy a big DVD box set (and, I guess, own a gaming console that can still play discs) to make that happen. Criminal how WB is letting these get lost to history.

OK? Doesn’t change that that’s usually who TV networks hire for those jobs. Not unique to EPL on NBC at all, as you clearly know from naming a bunch of pundits that cover EPL for other broadcasters
000
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Thats fair but I don’t think it overturns my point tbh. The marquee games are the linchpins of the coverage; would the article I’m replying to be much different if all the marquee games had British commentators (for the same reason I said) but Ipswich v. Leeds had an American pbp? Don’t think so.
100
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
On match commentary, you need commentators that can travel to the matches, so that means hiring people who live in England, which probably means hiring English people rather than Americans. Could an American do Rebecca Lowe’s job? Yeah, but Rebecca Lowe is great so why wouldn’t they keep her?
130
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
I’m not sure it’s really that deep. “Have the pundits be people who played in the league” is what pretty much every presenter in pretty much every sport does, and there’s just not that deep of a pool of Americans who played in the PL (and many of the ones who did are proven to be shit broadcasters)

Scott, it’s simple. When a club like Newcastle or Aston Villa uses the massive financial advantage they have to pry a player away from a club in Europe, that’s good. But if a rich club in England later does the same thing to them, it’s bad. Why are those things different? Uhhhh um well hm let’s see…

Then if we want Kroupi/whoever in January or the summer as our long-term guy, we can make those contacts now confident in our ability to have a squad place for him and money incoming
000
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Why not make it a de facto loan? Negotiate a price for next summer with Barcelona now at a small premium to what we pay atleti, which becomes basically a broker’s fee for facilitating the move atleti wouldn’t do. Everyone goes in eyes open, we get the player for a season and price certainty on sale

I like how this bit let us know both (1) this is a very standard question that we ask of everyone, no malice or pointedness to it, and also (2) actually we did have a specific reason to ask him this question, which is that we think it’s a pretty good “gotcha” for people like him, who we detest

…unless you’re Manchester City, in which case it’s apparently X struggles for playing time, scores only two league goals across two seasons ➡️ also doesn’t get selected for his national team ➡️ sell him for €99 million somehow

Buying young player X as an elite club Path 1: X hits, becomes valuable member of 1st team ➡️ club doesn’t sell him Path 2: X struggles for minutes ➡️ X is seen as flop, wages limit his market ➡️ club doesn’t sell him Path 3, where X is good enough to play but disposable enough to sell is crazy narrow

The thing about ex-Obama people is they’re kind of like players that won the NBA Finals as LeBron’s teammate. Like yeah they’re champions and I’m sure they helped along the way, but that doesn’t mean a different team can expect to win a title themselves just because they signed JR Smith
040
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Separate from whether Konsa was the right solution at the right price, I don’t think it’s right to call this a “short term problem.” Saliba is not going back to playing full 90s every 3 days any time soon
120
the theis must flow @frenchdipset.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
I had hoped that winning the title would quiet some of that panicky stuff down, at least a little bit, at least for a season or two. Obviously that was a terribly naive hope.
