World’s softest grandpa and worst jazz trumpeter. Cricket, rugby, music, history, books, theatre, politics and - above all - family. You’d probably describe me as woke. And if you did, that’d be OK. I was (still am, for now) @freedmanhp4 in t’other place.

The MCC might not be the most enlightened of the world’s institutions (although it’s actually better than its traditional reputation) but I don’t think they’d grant even 1/3rd of Trump membership.

Great moments in Scottish philosophy history: Adam Smith on his way to the BBC studios to pitch his prototype dalek design, whilst elevating his skirts to avoid a large turd deliberately placed in his path by Adam Ferguson.

A funeral cortège on a rainy Tuesday in Barnsley is funnier than Delboy falling through the bar.

Better still, being in the audience at those constituency hustings (which should be electronic and frequent) should be a requirement to vote.

Supermarkets have their many uses and are nowadays unavoidable in most places if you want to eat. But selling edible fruit isn’t one of them.

Er…..not just “right wing groups”. Also: people who actually understand what Zionism is and people who aren’t 15 year-olds who’ve had their “consciousness raised”.

That is very definitely the opposite of the truth. In fact - not that it’s any of your business - until three years ago this coming Wednesday I wouldn’t even have described myself as a Zionist.

Because it is an inaccurate coinage, at least as it has been deployed for the past 50 years. Palestine was once a home to many peoples. Egyptian and Syrian despots and Hashemite kings were at least as responsible for creating the self-conscious “Palestinian” idea as the UN-chartered Jewish state.

3/3 Nazism was the crisis that made Israel’s creation urgent. But equitable treatment of Jews in the countries of the Middle East just might have made a separate state unnecessary. And equitable treatment of their own people by Jordan, Egypt etc might have given “Palestinians” a different future.

2/3 its denialist neighbours it might have clung on to. The only state tolerant of, for example, homosexuality or women’s equality for 100s of miles in any direction. Arab members of Knesset and judiciary (how many Jewish MPs or judges have there been in Arab countries since the Ottoman Empire)?

Tell me you know nothing about the pogroms against Jews in Arab and North African countries (Fahud, Aden, etc) that rendered Jewish life impossible in the entire Levant before (and after) Balfour. Or the non-fascist (indeed socialist) principles on which Israel imagined itself and which, but for 1/3

My old man, who lived in Bancroft Road at the time but whose mother and grandparents had lived in Cable Street (at least for the 1911 census and probably later) was there; as he told it anyway. Whether he was or not on that actual day, he did his share of fash-bash round that manor in the ‘thirties.

See also: Australians. “England has been bowled out for 341”. But, as someone on here has already said, you can make a perfectly sound case for either.

Although it feels like I am shouting into the void about this sometimes, I want to share some further thoughts on the “Zionism is Racism” motion which the Green Party is due to debate in the next 16 hours. Just to address various points which I think people in general should know. A thread:

The assumption has to be that teabags are not involved at any point. Or at worst, they are, but in a pot. Doing it as you suggest (especially as the teabag will have been sitting in a pool of milk under one process) would create a concoction so foul that the entire experiment would be moot.

David Freedman @freedmanhp4.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
The comparison is tea in first or milk in first. I don’t think water in first is ever part of the OP’s experiment. One would certainly hope not.

Ours was replaced about three years ago. Probably a death trap, but I derived a little passing satisfaction from being able to repair a fuse that had gone by rootling around in the shed for the right bit of wire and then fitting it.

Heavens! For two people you can’t need an enormous screen. Why not hunt around for a (modern with HDMI socket) monitor of the required size on eBay and plug your presentation into that. Then you can meet anywhere.

I think you might need to ask. It will differ from venue to venue. A Regus sub-brand “Spaces” rented me a place (which I ended up not using) in West Kensington for £70. I didn’t need a screen but I expect some places will have them. Email: reception.kensingtonvillage@spaceworks.com

I’ve rented small offices from Regus for (depending on where it is) as little as £70 for half a day.

Democracy is general elections. Parliament is sovereign (isn’t that what all the Leavers banged on about endlessly?). Referendums are governments abdicating responsibility.

Governments in office can, and should, do whatever they see fit. Under our constitution the idea that a new First Lord of the Treasury and his ministers might do things that others didn’t set out this side of the last election, requires a new “mandate”, is absolute rubbish.

I hate Trump, RFK and the whole anti-science, anti-vaccine, anti-protection bollocks they espouse. But there must be something very different about the way raw milk dairies in the USA operate to those elsewhere, because it’s fairly common here and as far as I know, has a fairly good safety record.

I’ve had to more or less give up drinking. Currently heading south through Bourgogne on A31. Passing signs to exits for Nuits St Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos Vougeot etc is a very odd kind of torture.

Ah, they’ve obviously learned that trick from the minicab industry. (Though most of those are much better at reporting their whereabouts honestly now). A TFL minute (as judged by the overhead time readouts on Tube platforms) is longer than a minute anywhere else in the universe.

And on most London ‘bus shelters there’s an LED display of when the next 3 or 4 are arriving based (presumably) on GPS or transponder data. Also in other cities like St Albans and Oxford. I would guess elsewhere as well.

This won’t be news, but is worth re-stating. Just had to use a taxi. Uber quote was £51. Called local taxi firm. No long hold or automated menus. Straight through to controller. £10. Picked me up in 5 minutes, driver knew his way around. Took cash or card. And didn’t harvest any travel pattern data.
