Anand is the best (and I'm doing an event with him at, yes, @cityartssf.bsky.social Thursday, for his new book Man in the Mirror). Couldn't agree more that cities are refuges or places of last resort for people kicked out of rural/suburban/pseudo-idyllic America.

The current political moment has shown me how many people go through life frustrated that they don’t have the right state apparatus to indulge their worst urges. They‘re not “left behind”, they’re not “lonely”, they want to hurt other people. And this is their generational opportunity.

Who is draining Africa? This figure shows net-appropriation of resources from Africa's CFA zone, illustrating two key facts. 1) Eurozone countries are the biggest appropriators, benefitting from the Francafrique system. 2) Contrary to conventional Western narratives, China's appropriation is tiny.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

Indigenous woman reading large didactic sign at Kamloops Indian Residential School. Green and Yellow sign is in front of a brick wall. Sign Text: The school was built in 1890, then re-built in 1923 due to a fire and remained open until 1977. In the 1920's, Native children aged 4-15 years were forcibly taken and prohibited from seeing their families, practicing their languages, cultures, and traditions. Children attending K.I.R.S experienced extreme isolation and segregation.

Displaced families do not know whether to protect themselves from the rain or from missiles and planes. They only have a tattered piece of cloth to protect the bodies? Will our lives remain cheap? I wonder how a world that sends ships into space can fail to stop the killing of an innocent person⁉️🇵🇸💔

There are many valid explanations for the success of the far right around the world. But much of it comes down to this: The right has realised that anything is possible, while the left has persuaded itself that nothing is possible.
