Today's column is on the relentless march of blithering idiocy, which includes denying climate science while your house is - literally in this case - burning down. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

A conversation between Joe Rogan and Mel Gibson summed up 2025 for me – and not in a good way | George Monbiot

From merrily dismissing climate science, to promoting irresponsible health claims, the podcast was an unintentional warning for our times, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Having seen that podcast, it was like watching two fools desperately trying to one-up each other as they extolled their bogus alternative medicine adventures. They were truly ridiculous. Anyone who believes their grift needs a lot of help.

Good roar! That even Mel Gibson is high on MAGA propaganda and willingly a tool in it!! This one is odd too. On the surface it explains our individual and social de-powerment via lies intentionally piled upon lies. But it's also so demotivating that it cd be part of the scheme bc it lacks a remedy?

A metaphor: Humanity is having a crazy party in a large hall on the top floor of a residential high-rise. There's a severe fire blazing on the bottom floors of the building. Since the fire started the partygoers have been bickering abt whether there is a fire and if so who stated it. They're doomed.

There's a glaring inconsistency in the denialist position. They frequently say that "climate has always changed" therefore the warming is not human-caused. However, forest fires have existed for millions of years but they are quick to blame arson - a human cause. Bit of a contradiction there.

To be fair, melting ice in water doesn't increase water volume, there are multiple studies that show mebendazole etc can improve cancer outcomes and California wildfires may have been exacerbated by some of the choices made by the state. The problem isn't that they're wrong, they're being misled.

320

Ivor Tymchak @ivor.bsky.social · 27/12/2025

Surely the ice in water analogy should be a full glass of water with the ice suspended over the glass in a strainer? When the ice melts the glass overflows. I mean, how deluded do you need to be to imagine all the ice on the planet is floating on water?
