Murder She Wrote is an excellent example of how women's thoughts are discounted, regardless of their expertise and track record. It is also a great example of the way women often have to suppress their frustration at this treatment in order to exist in spaces.

Went to the West Lafayette Water Resource Recovery Facility as part of AGRY 585 & was surprised to learn that part of WL is still on a combined sewer system. This means that when we have high precipitation events sewage is flushed into the Wabash river. 1/2 www.nyc.gov/site/dep/wat...

TIL by using Purdue's amazing writing lab, OWL, that data is plural so I should be saying "The data were analyzed" not "The data was analyzed" and I *deeply* dislike this 😂

This is the happiest day of my life! I can't express my joy at discovering that the people I look up to the most have decided that I am worth investing more time & energy into. That they could see value in me one day being a colleague. @metarolism.bsky.social #Purdue #PhDStudent #SoilMicrobiology
Screenshot of a letter from Purdue University, office of the vice provost for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. It says Aprils 24, 2026. Dear Francis,

Congratulations! This letter serves as your official notification of admission to graduate studies at the Purdue University West Lafayette campus. I am delighted to welcome you to a community of more than 13,000 graduate students on our three campuses who come to us from every state in the Union and from 108 countries.

I teach at a small private liberal arts college. Beautiful leafy campus. Tight knit community. Outstanding education at $60K per year. I have many students who live off-campus and only eat because they work at fast food joints. I keep soup, ramen packets, pb crackers, and snacks in my office 💔

With the funding lapse looming, I just went ahead and sent out messages through our course management system that included a schedule for campus area food banks to all students in my courses this semester.

Even in normal times I have had the financial privilege to bring snacks to my 3hr lectures/labs and it makes a difference with student participation, engagement and lets them know in a small way I care about them. Worth it to me. Not something everyone can afford to do (As an adjunct I understand).

Professors, some of your students just lost their access to food. This will put a strain on their ability to pay rent and focus in class. They might need to not pay electric to make ends meet. They might be coming to class hungry. Please be aware that the loss of SNAP will impact your students

Submitted my first IRB and just refreshing it constantly so I can address any comments immediately. Does this ever get less stressful? 😬

This commission statement refers to people with Autism, ADHD, asthma, auto-immune disease, and chronic illness as a “dire threat to the American people and our way of life”. This is a manifesto against disability. This is the language of eugenics.

#AcademicSky #STEM Is there any way to get small amounts of Whirl-Pak bags? I do not need 500. In my whole life, I might not need 500. I need 50 max
A screenshot from a website selling Nasco B01062WA Whirl-Pak Bags, 3" X 7.25", 2.25Ml, 4Oz, W/Write-On Area, Box Of 500

They are a narrow clear plastic bag with a white area in the middle to write on. The top has a special closing mechanism and is yellow. It says Whirl-Pak on the yellow part

Just saying that sensory bombardment is considered psychological torture. If the work place had super bright lights & really loud sounds, all of ya'll would be stimming & unable to get shit done too. Autistic ppl are often more sensitive to sensory input so "normal" lights/sounds can be painful

Reading some papers & questioning assumptions I'm seeing made abt self-efficacy (one’s belief in their ability to complete tasks or accomplish goals) The lit says that low self-efficacy results in depression & anxiety but why not assume that depression/anxiety causes low self efficacy?

I really don't have anyone in my life that is in academia so I figure I would ask here What should the timeline look like for applying to grad programs? My second semester of Jr yr starts Jan. Should I be doing anything this semester? 1/3

Thanks to the amazing assistance of @jrossibarra.bsky.social & Dr. Toby Kellogg I think I have it figured out! #botany #agronomy #forage #purdue
A infographic created by Francis Corvin showing different morphology traits of a grass inflorescence (flower). There is a central stem and off the right side is two tree looking structures. On the left there is also two of these structures. The top left one is circled in red and it has a text box which says "Paracladia aka paraclades. Lateral repeating floral shoots along rachis" There are two red brackets indicating the space between neighboring paraclades (those tree like structures). These two text boxes say "Inflorescence internodes. Distance between paraclades differentiates between digitate, subdigitate, and “raceme of spikes” inflorescence types. Digitate arrangement is when this inflorescence internode distance is zero. Subdigitate is when the inflorescence distance is short. “Raceme of spikes” is when the inflorescence internode distance is longer." The center stem has a red arrow pointing at it and it says "Center stem of inflorescence is the rachis"

digitate - internode length is virtually zero, subdigitate - internode length is short, raceme of spikes - internode length is longish."

Holy hell she's awesome. First, her reply (<10 minutes after I messaged her at 10pm on a Monday): "Those particular terms are pretty confusing; they represent an attempt to reduce a continuous variable (length of internodes along the rachis of the inflorescnece) to a qualitative variable. ...

“This terminology is misleading in its simplicity, and in particular in the inclusion of so many disparate structures under the term "panicle". This problem has been observed by several workers .. who realized that more precise descriptions of morphology would be necessary.” doi.org/10.2307/2322...

The project I am working on is making grass identification guides more accessible and in order to do that I need to sort out all the different terms used and their synonyms. Here is a table of just the ligule terms I have found. #Botany can we agree this is a tad complicated and hard to understand?
Ligule morphology synonyms as reported in various grass identification guides.
Fringed, Tipped with fine hairs, Fringe of hairs on upper portion, Ciliate.
Jagged, Lacerate, Ripped, Shredded, Ragged, Erose apex.
Long, Very long, Very prominent, Tall, Large.
Short, Very short, Inconspicuous, Truncate.
Acute apex, Pointed tip.
Lacking hair, Eciliate, Without cilia.
Scalloped, Toothed on top, Toothed, Lacerate apex, Wavy, Undulating.

wait wait wait.... according to this website a "Panicle" and "Compound raceme" are synonyms?? 🤯 Northern Ontario Plant Database. (2024). Inflorescence Types. Northern Ontario Plant Database. www.northernontarioflora.ca/inflorescenc...
Screenshot of Indeterminate inflorescences. The ones listed on here are spike, raceme, corymb, simple umbels, capitulum or head, panicle (compound raceme), compound corymb, compound umbel, thyrse

The more I try to understand this, the more I confuse myself. I am now unsure of facts I previously knew. I am holding my face asking myself "What even IS a panicle?? How is it different than a compound raceme?? What even is reality?" Anyhow, finals week is going fine

Grass morphology lacks a unified consensus. Is a raceme of spikes the same thing as a digitate inflorescence? Maybe. Or is a digitate inflorescence a type of spike inflorescence? Could be. Also might be a subtype of raceme. Just depends which grass morphology book or paper you are reading *sob*
