The woodturning workshop has finished, and I barely finished turning the outside of this vase. I am not really happy about the shape, maybe I will continue working on it someday... #woodworking #woodturning

Pentagon shaped bowl made from dibetou. The shape (especially of the rim) is inspired by a similar bowl which I saw during a recent wood turning event. #woodworking #woodturning
The bowl, which is round in the middle and has five edges on the outside.Close-up on one of the edges.

Fun new project with a couple of edges 😊 #woodworking #woodturning
Turning a piece of dibetou on the lathe. The piece on the lathe in the middle of the turning process. It will be a bowl with five edges.

This was a lengthy project: a ship on rough seas. Everything is turned on the lathe, even the sail. The water and the ship are hollowed out, which can both be used as two boxes. Bon voyage! 😊 #woodworking #woodturning
The finished project on a table. The water is dyed on the outside. Everything else is just finished with oil.The three individual parts of the projects.

Drilling on the lathe never gets boring 😊 #woodworking #woodturning
An image of drilling on the lathe just when I pulled back the drill. Looks like a little explosion 😊

I was working on this piece of maple ... until I found the home of someone 😀 #woodworking #woodturning
Wood turning a piece of maple. After sanding, I noticed a small hole, which was probably caused by a woodworm.

Coloring some goldfield burl using spirit stain. I used two different types of blue, which led to a rich appearance. #woodworking #woodturning

Definitely not the easiest piece to hollow out 😊 #woodworking #woodturning
Hollowing out a piece of goldfield burl.Working with it was tricky, because I wanted to preserve the wild texture on top. Also, I had to measure a lot to ensure that I did not create a hole by accident.

Aha, 2000 is a lot! I also usually stop at 320. Sometimes I add 400. And in rare cases, I go to 600. Thanks!

It turned out that the faceplate works very nicely for glueing together such lengthy structures. #woodworking #woodturning
Adding glue to the pieces which I saw recently. To apply pressure, I put them into the faceplate.Just the upper part needed some additional pressure with clamps. The glued piece. It just needs a little sanding to clean up the glued joint.

A bowl made from walnut. It is just the beginning 😊Cutting the bowl into three parts. The three pieces after cutting.I sanded the surfaces where I sawed previously. Do you see what this will become? To be continued...

Thank you! Next time I will test alternatives to the water based dye, though :)

I probably added something like 10 coats of dye. I sanded once in-between. It still looked a bit greyish, even after all these coats. I then wiped the dried surface with a cleaning rag, which helped a lot. The final step was applying two coats of hard wax oil to achieve the final look.

I colored the lid black after considering the input from multiple people. Now the box somewhat resembles a solar eclipse when looking from top 😎 #woodworking #woodturning
Box in my hands. The base is made from ash, the lid is dyed oak.Opening the box. The box is finished with hard wax oil.Close up on the base. It shows some nice reflections in the sun.Look onto the lid from below. It took me multiple layers of dye before I was satisfied with the color.

Nice! How will you let it dry? And how long?

Fox Crafting Studio @foxcraftingstudio.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Well, it turned out that you are right. The water based stain made it look greyish, and also some fibers don't want to become black. I hope for improvements once I add hard wax oil. I may also add further layers of stain.

Thank you for the idea! For this project, I already started staining the lid. But I will keep the idea of grey wash in mind. Until your comment, I didn't know about it.

Carving in details is on my list, too. So far I wasn't brave enough. But I am always amazed by what other people can do by combining woodturning and carving.

I used the water based stain before, see the linked post below. I had to apply multiple coats of the stain, but the end result was quite convincing. I will share the current project once it's done. bsky.app/profile/foxc...

Thank you for your opinion! Such a contrast is nice, indeed. I colored some bowls on the exterior before, and left the interior natural. Coloring the interior instead is a nice idea, I may also try that one day.

Thank you for your feedback! I already have some black water based stain available, which I may use. I tried ebonising once on a test piece, but I wasn't happy with the result. Maybe I messed up the mixture, though.

A little bowl made from lime wood. The blank looked plain, the shape is simple. I quite like this plain, simple bowl 😊 #woodworking #woodturning
