We know what happens when our landscapes — the very landscapes that sustain our resilience — are sacrificed to the greed of a few. Watch “Empty Lands”. It might makes you angry. Good. www.youtube.com/watch?v=52st... #wetlands #peatlands #naturebasedsolutions #climateaction #biodiversity

🪲 Small soil-dwelling giants! Ground beetles play a key role in healthy ecosystems: they regulate insect populations, contribute to soil processes and support food webs. 🔎 They’re also excellent bioindicators, helping us track how peatlands respond to restoration. #Peatlands #Biodiversity

Like many Central European peatlands, Austrian raised #bogs were widely drained during the 19th and early 20th centuries to facilitate forestry and peat extraction. The Karlstifter Moor was no exception. 🌿💧

Are expanding northern peatlands cooling or warming the climate? It depends on how they develop🧪 This study combines paleoecology, remote sensing and hydrological modelling to examine peatland expansion and vegetation succession in a subarctic fen margin in Lapland bg.copernicus.org/articles/22/...
Slide titled “External and internal drivers behind the formation, vegetation succession, and carbon balance of a subarctic fen margin,” followed by a list of authors. Below the title are two side-by-side color maps labeled (a) and (b) showing a subarctic peatland area. The left map illustrates spatial patterns of exchange flux with a color scale ranging from blue (low/negative values) to red (high/positive values). The right map shows differences in groundwater table (GWT) levels, with colors ranging from blue (lower values) to yellow and red (higher values). Legends identify peatland types such as fens, bogs, and treed fens, and both maps include a north arrow and scale bar. The Wet Horizons logo appears at the bottom

🌍 Happy World Wetlands Day! 💧Wetlands come in many forms, such as marshes, bogs, and fens. Among them, peatlands are wetlands where long-term waterlogging and low-oxygen conditions allow partially decomposed organic matter to accumulate over centuries. Here are a few key facts ⬇️

🍃 #Peatlands store vast amounts of #carbon and play a key role in #water regulation and #biodiversity protection. Yet decades of drainage and land-use change have left many European peatlands degraded, turning former climate allies into sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

🌿 Peatlands cover just 2.84% of Earth’s land but store 25% of its soil carbon — twice as much as all forests combined! When healthy, they trap carbon & regulate water. When drained, they release massive GHGs.
