Artist Laura Wheeler Waring was a renowned portrait painter during the Harlem Renaissance. Her mother, Christiana Freeman, was an Underground Railroad agent & the daughter of Philip Livingston (grandson of a Declaration of Independence signer) & Barbara Williams, an enslaved woman from Jamaica.
Waring made this oil portrait, "Girl in a Green Cap,” in 1948. Her portraits generally depicted well-known Black American figures, however, the identity of this young woman is unknown. She is seated, wearing jade jewelry and white gossamer sleeves, looking past the viewer.

Otti Berger (Croatian/Jewish, born otd in 1898 🎂, died in Auschwitz 1944) : Rya-rug, 1928-29, Bauhaus Berger, an esteemed textile artist and weaver, studied and later taught at the Bauhaus school when it was at the height of popularity in Germany. Further info in the alt text 👇
She was one of the few female students and educators at the Bauhaus who managed to rack up a respectable reputation. Otti has been described as "one of the most talented students at the weaving workshop".

Aside from creating innovative designs and processes, Berger also served as a deputy in the textile workshop under Lily Reich.
Not allowed to work in Germany under Nazi rule because of her Jewish roots, Berger fled to London in 1937. However, her hearing impairment and language barrier made life in England difficult. In a letter to a friend, Berger penned, "The English are very reserved. I believe it will take ten years before one has a circle of friends. I am always alone and find it difficult because I do not know English and cannot hear."

Over the course of several years, Berger's attempts to emigrate to the US failed. László Moholy-Nagy had offered her a place as head of weaving at the New Bauhaus in Chicago, which she would never reach. She wrote to Naum Gabo, Walter Gropius, and other friends trying to gain a teaching visa in 1937 but never acquired one.

Against the pleas of close friends, Berger returned to her homeland of Zmajevac in 1938 to help her family with her mother's poor health. After several years spent with family, in April 1944 Berger was deported alongside her brother, half-brother, and his wife to a detention camp in Mohács. Shortly thereafter in May 1944, they were transferred to Auschwitz. Only Berger's brother, Otto, survived.

Framing an enigmatic Modern Girl (moga) in sharp profile, this 1929 pamphlet cover for Tokyo’s Asakusa Shochiku-za captures the vibrant fusion of avant-garde European design and Japanese early Showa urban culture.
The figure dominates the right side of the composition, her iconic short bob anchored by a crimson domino mask that shrouds her gaze in theatrical mystery. A towering, diamond-patterned Art Deco hat in red and cream rises above her head, paired with a string of white pearls and a bold red lapel. To the left, a vertical strip of black-and-white pinstripes borders an ochre field stamped with a circular red medallion depicting a sailing ship framed by Russian-inspired typography. At the base, stylized right-to-left graphic lettering reads Bunka Kaien Revyū Shochiku-za ("Shochiku-za Culture Opening Revue"), designating the official program pamphlet for performances beginning May 16. Published on May 16, 1929 (Shōwa 4), this program cover commemorates the heyday of the Asakusa Shochiku-za, a landmark theater in Tokyo's premier entertainment quarter. During the late 1920s, Asakusa served as the epicenter of Shōwa Modernism and the Ero Guro Nansen'su ("Erotic Grotesque Nonsense") cultural movement, where modern revues like the Shochiku Kagekidan (SKD) captivated audiences with jazz, Western choreography, and theatrical masquerade. The rapid adoption of Russian Constructivism, Bauhaus geometry, and French Art Deco reflects the cosmopolitan fervor of post-earthquake Tokyo, where commercial artists pushed the limits of printmaking and typography (monozukuri), turning promotional ephemera into high graphic art.

Japanese old farm house with open hearth.
Sunken into the dark, polished floorboards of a rural interior, an open hearth (irori) anchors a dimly illuminated domestic space. A heavy, dark cast-iron kettle (tetsubin) hangs suspended over the ash pit from a vertical bamboo-and-wood adjustable pothook (jizaikagi), its wooden counterweight caught in the ambient glow. Rough, unbarked wooden logs encircle the pit, their rustic edges resting upon the worn timber floor. Soft shafts of morning sunlight pierce through thin veils of woodsmoke hanging in the rafters, illuminating the warm amber tones of sliding paper screens (shōji) and dark wooden partitions (fusuma) that recede into an adjoining room where a low tea table (chabudai) rests in quiet shadow.

Central to the architectural layout of traditional Japanese farmhouses (minka), the sunken hearth served as both the functional and communal heart of agrarian life. Operating continuously throughout the year, the irori provided warmth, light, and a cooking fire in homes constructed without chimneys. Smoke from the open hearth rose freely into the high, exposed ceiling framework, coating the structural timbers with a natural, protective patina of soot. The adjustable jizaikagi mechanism, often utilizing a wooden lever as a counterweight and symbolic fire-preventative motif, enabled residents to raise or lower iron kettles and cooking pots directly over the glowing embers with precise control.

Aesthetically, the hazy interior presents a quintessential realization of in'ei raisan (praise of shadows), where spatial depth and atmosphere emerge from the delicate interplay of gloom, rising smoke, and filtered sunlight. The smoke-darkened beams, unvarnished hearth logs, and patinated iron kettle embody the essence of wabi-sabi and yōnobi—the profound beauty discovered within utilitarian objects aged through daily domestic use and fire.
