Scientists have been publishing climate models since ~1970. A good way to evaluate their skill is to compare what they expected to happen in the years after the model was published to observed climate changes. It turns out most models were pretty spot-on:

If you've heard about inertia as a potential component of the Spanish grid failure, this short video from NREL is a great overview of what it is and how a variety of sources, including renewables and batteries, can also provide this essential service: www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9JN...

This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

For the greatest cushion between these holidays, we'll have to wait all the way until 2029, the next year both numbers hit their max values: 33 total days and 10 weekend days.

2024 was a year in which we had the minimum number of each - just 27 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and 8 weekend days. Next year we'll get 28 total days, but still just 8 weekend days.

Because (U.S.) Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, the specific date on which it occurs changes each year in a six-year sequence. This yields a different number of days between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year, including a different number of weekend days.

If you felt like the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas was compressed this year, you are not wrong.

People sometimes make fun of science that sounds stupid and random. Meanwhile, a study of lizard saliva turned into a peptide medication, which was turned into a diabetes medication, which was turned into a GLP1 weight loss drug, that just became the first therapy every approved for … sleep apnea

Is the Urban Shift Toward Trump Really About Democratic Cities in Disarray?
Big cities have faced serious problems lately. But there’s little evidence those problems are what drove voters to the right in November.

1) Many underestimate the investment the PRC has put into influencing the US social media sphere. 2) The destruction of Trust and Safety at X has made it a playground for PRC actors. 3) It's nice to see them whine about BlueSky. 4) But there is nothing magical about BlueSky to keep them away.
