Summer 1987: New York City mayor Ed Koch announces a bicycle ban in midtown. Slow-ride protests led by bike messengers fought the ban, & city residents sided with the cyclists. The ban was lifted before it ever went into effect. 📷Carl Hultberg

This technology was first deployed against sex workers; those who advertised with hotel-room selfies were targeted. The programs identified the hotel, then sent cops to "rescue" (arrest) them.

If you still consume (or create) Harry Potter related content, know that JKR is a TERF and uses her wealth to actively harm trans people. Educate yourself, then do better. If you refuse to do better, you deeply disgust me.

For email I have heard good things about Fastmail. I don't use it, because I am in Germany and here mailbox.org is a good option. For video content: that's a lot harder and I am not aware of anything coming close to youtube.

nitter.net is down. xcancel.com may go soon, too. all the respect to the folks at nitter for their services so far, but to be honest, X completely locking itself out of the web is probably a net positive for us all in the long term

Cease and desist
On 24 August 2026 cease and desist letters have been sent by X Corp. demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project's repository.

nitter.net is offline and development has stopped for the time being. I'm seeking legal advice and won't be commenting further on the specifics for now.

Thank you to everyone who used, hosted, packaged, donated and contributed to Nitter over the past seven years.

I've never seen such an effort to censor a document as I have the Amnesty International report on gender critical groups because of JK Rowling. They removed the report from the Wayback Machine and now I got a DMCA strike on my Google Drive for having it. It was deleted and removed from my account.

A screenshot of an email viewed in dark mode with the subject line "Google DMCA Violation." The email from Google informs the recipient that they have received a notification under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that some of their materials allegedly infringe on copyrights. It explains the removal process, mentions that notice details will be posted on Lumen, warns against repeated violations, and lists one affected Google Drive URL at the bottom

A nearly identical mobile browser screenshot of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. It shows a search for the same Amnesty International UK resources URL, resulting in the same message: "This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine."
