this reminds me of how (what felt like) half of all autism advocacy on twitter was about ABA and i kept thinking "pretty sure that's literally illegal in most countries"

yipee! time to have a new favourite person of the day, to hyperfixate on and watch all of their content on all of their social media platforms for half a day like some sort of stalker. and then forget this person exists in a day or two

if ai artists had started to learn how to draw years ago, when the midjourney & co hype exploded, and put their time and effort into proper art practice instead of arguing 24-7 on twitter that "prompt engineering" takes sooo much skill, they'd probably be fairly competent artists by now

> 50 bucks for a 20yo game to be fair it's more than just a standard "make the textures look nicer" remaster, it overhauls quite a lot of the game mechanics too as far as i know and the devs put a lot of effort/time/money into it. the price is absolutely justified imo

Screencap from the Oblivion Remastered livestream. Next to the box art of the Deluxe Edition are its contents, one of which are two horse armor skins: Order (which is white and gold), and Cataclysm (which is black and dark red).

unrelated to oblivion in particular, this short article perfectly articulates the fundamental problem i too have with enjoying pretty much any remaster or remake, or even sequels that tread the same ground as the original

A screenshot from the article: Oblivion was a great game, but what I want to experience again most of all is the intangible excitement that came from it being a novelty. A remaster can't scrub my brain clean of my overexposure to games of its ilk. That's one of the unfortunate but inevitable drawbacks of any remaster (or remake, for that matter). Sure, Oblivion will look much nicer, and I'll check it out in the name of nostalgia and media-obligated science, but I'll really be chasing a high that is simply unattainable.

Another screenshot: Remasters are great for making games look and play "the way you remember them," but they can't make you feel the same way you did the first time. Some come close; the Dead Space remake added new mechanical bells and whistles to make the game even scarier on the second go around. Metroid Prime Remastered reinforced that title as one of the best ever, and there are still few shooters like it. Perhaps it's because Oblivion is one of the originators of a now oversaturated genre that the idea of going back to it is less appealing without that now-expired novelty factor.
