Today Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele visited the White House. There Bukele and Trump doubled down on their illegal scheme that has resulted in the disappearances of over 280 people to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT mega-prison. Our full statement: cgrs.uclawsf.edu/news/bukele-...
Quote from Felipe Navarro, CGRS Associate Director of Policy and Advocacy, reads: "The U.S. government should be working with our regional neighbors to defend human rights and the rule of law. Instead, the Trump administration is collaborating with Bukele to violate our laws and evade accountability, condemning people to indefinite abuse and imprisonment in another country, then falsely claiming it is powerless to redress the grave harm it has caused. We urge the administration to immediately end this blatantly illegal practice and return to the United States every single person disappeared to the CECOT."

We don’t need to reinvent the wheel and can dispense with unhelpful terms like ‘climate refugee’. Existing laws, applied correctly, can protect people.

How the HECK is it not a nationwide scandal that Trump told federal law enforcement to divert resources away from drug trafficking and terrorism cases to instead prioritize prosecuting undocumented immigrants for living here? They screamed about fentanyl and then did this!
Memorandum from the Acting Deputy Attorney General
Subject: Interim Policy Changes Regarding Charging, Sentencing, And Immigration Enforcement
Page 3
The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) and the Project Safe
Neighborhoods (PSN) program shall establish national initiatives to provide focused resources and attention to immigration-related prosecutions at the federal, state, and local levels. OCDETF and PSN will focus on facilitating access by U.S. Attorney's Offices to existing structures in which the Justice Department participates, such as Joint Task Force Vulcan, which targets MS-13 and will be expanded to target TdA, and Joint Task Force Alpha, which targets human trafficking. The regional OCDETF Strike Forces shall prioritize the investigation and prosecution of immigration offenses, including by requiring OCDETF-funded AUSAs to devote significant time and attention to the investigation and prosecution of these crimes. The new OCDETF and PSN national initiatives shall also prioritize enhanced statistical tracking of these efforts.
Pending implementation of the Homeland Security Task Forces announced by President Trump on January 20, 2025, the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Forces are directed to coordinate with DHS, as well as state and local members, to assist in the execution of President Trump's immigration-related initiatives. The FBI, DEA, ATF, USMS, and BOP shall review their files for identifying information and/or biometric data relating to non-citizens located illegally in the United States. All such information and data shall be disclosed to DHS, for the sole purpose of facilitating appropriate removals, enforcement actions, and immigration-related investigations and prosecutions, unless the agency possessing the information and data determines that a particular disclosure would compromise a significant law enforcement investigation and the U.S.

This week the Trump administration announced a set of extreme anti-immigrant policies that will gut access to asylum and exacerbate suffering and chaos at the border. We're ready to use every tool at our disposal to halt these destructive measures. Our statement: cgrs.uclawsf.edu/news/cgrs-de...
Photo of mom and child with sign that reads, "YA BASTA DE DEPORTACIONES"; Text reads, "CGRS will defend asylum, challenge cruel policies. Trump’s first set of extreme executive actions seek to destroy all pathways to safety for refugees: • Shutdown of asylum at border • End to parole, CBP One programs • Reinstatement of Remain in Mexico • Family separations • Mass detention • Resettlement ban"Quote from CGRS Director of Litigation Melissa Crow reads, "The president’s first set of executive actions recycles the unlawful asylum policies of his first term, many of which the courts struck down, and all of which made communities on both sides of the border less safe. The president has offered no real solutions to the challenges at our southern border. He has instead doubled down on racist fearmongering and tried-and-failed policies of cruelty. We are ready to take this administration to court and use every tool at our disposal to halt these destructive measures. They are designed only to sow fear, punish immigrants and refugees, and destroy all legal pathways to safety for people fleeing persecution and torture."

"Mexico is seeking an agreement with US President-elect Donald Trump to ensure it does not receive deportees from 3rd countries," Reuters reports. (www.reuters.com/world/americ...) From tomorrow's Border Update, here are times when the López Obrador government agreed to receive 3rd-country returns.
The government of Sheinbaum’s predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, agreed to accept returns of non-Mexicans on three occasions:

- The “Remain in Mexico” or “Migrant Protection Protocols” program (2019-2021 and, briefly by court order, 2021-2022) sent [[over 81,000]] non-Mexican migrants back into Mexico to await asylum hearings in U.S. immigration courts. [[Many]] suffered attacks and abuses inside Mexico.
- The Title 42 pandemic expulsions policy (2020-2023) expelled migrants from seven countries other than Mexico, including would-be asylum seekers, [[nearly a million]] times.
- After Title 42 ended, Mexico’s government [[agreed]] to accept up to a combined 30,000 deportations per month of citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. This latter policy continues, although at a slower tempo: in October, just [[1,524]] citizens of those countries crossed the border without authorization, making them potentially subject to deportation under the Biden administration’s May 2023 rule limiting asylum access.
