In my opinion Powder and Artillery are the most efficacious, Sure, and infallibly conciliatory Measures We can adopt. - John Adams.

At least finding creative ways to call people stupid required *some* imagination

I think you could do it for less than that at like $2000/kid/month and see noticeable impacts. But that's still a ton of money.

Good point actually. Though light as they are (for ships) you've still got a lot of momentum behind a proper ramming attack. 47 tonnes is a quite a bit of mass. But I suspect you are right that it would take at minimum an extremely solid hit to do heavy damage if that.

Thats my thought. Just too much firepower to charge frontally into.

This is a direct attack on Chicago. I'll allow it.

While maneuver to assault seems to be slowly coming back i don't think anything is going to happen fast. The kind of follow on logistics you need to go from advance to breakthrough are even more heavily impacted by the transparent battlefield than assault elements.

I've said it before but any and all news stories about me would include the phrase "this reclusive billionaire" and would be about the life size flyable replica of the millennium falcon I'm trying to build.

So when do we send in the USAF? Not that I wasn't already radicalized but this shit is making me into a level of war hawk that would embarrass John Bolton.

back of the envelope math: a ship of the line was 100 times* more expensive than a trireme leading to the obvious question, could 100 triremes take a ship of the line?

I have opinions, let me tell you.

florian23.bsky.social @florian23.bsky.social · 12h
Wouldn't fit, triremes are smaller than a SotL but not that much smaller. You could fit maybe 3-4 a side at once, optimistically. Possibly less, gotta leave room for the oars and potential maneuver.

Do we have any engagement data from Peter the Great's galley fleet in the baltic? I know the Russians toyed with this but the plan was mostly to take advantage of shoal water and not fight SotL at all if you could.

You can't fit that many of them in the physical space at once, they can't all attack simultaneously simply because there's not enough room. And if we're talking the royal navy the highest recorded rate of fire of a Napoleonic era RN ship (burst, not sustainable) is something like 3 rounds/min.

florian23.bsky.social @florian23.bsky.social · 12h
If only because it can kite the triremes indefinitely and force them to close from one direction.
010
florian23.bsky.social @florian23.bsky.social · 12h
They'd probably want to ram to put a hole under the waterline rather than try to climb up the side of the much taller ship, but that requires giving the SotL a clear shot lengthwise down your rowing benches and ships of the line were durable. Would take more than one hit probably.

florian23.bsky.social @florian23.bsky.social · 12h
Yeah, galleys are very fragile and ships of the line were provisioned to fire at least one round/gun every 5 minutes or so for the kind of multi hour slugging match big 18th century naval battles turned into. Maybe not a one hit kill, but 3-4 rounds would likely be enough.

florian23.bsky.social @florian23.bsky.social · 12h
Theres a small version of this at Lepanto, the Spanish Galleons they brought along were basically untouchable. Of course those valleys had gunpowder and there were fewer of them.

I think on some level the solution is just going to be to wait it out. Vibes aren't permanent, even with social media pushing on the scale.

I think there are worse ways describe our immigration system than “in the 60s we managed to overcome the white supremacist goals of the old system, and the compromise we struck was ‘only let in ‘the deserving’ ones’, and this too has been under relentless attack from reactionaries since we did it”.

On some level, yes, but the fact that zionism is arguably more justified than a number of others doesn't really resolve the core contradiction between liberalism and ethnic nationalism. Its also unclear to me that having a state is really a long term safeguard against annihilation.

Gotta say the more I think about it the less certain I am that we can sever the link between 19th century nationalism and racism, but I'll admit I've been radicalized into being more strongly liberal than I used to be by *waves arms*

Trump’s superpower has always been that he radiates an anti-gravitas field, such that anything he touches becomes seen as fundamentally unserious. This has allowed Trump to pursue wars, tyranny, and corruption of immense gravity, while everyone tries to avoid looking like they care too much.
