Thermodynamic Properties of Gaseous Selenium Species of Atmospheric Interest
Selenium (Se) is an essential element for fauna, flora, and human health. Up to a third of Se can cycle through the atmosphere. The volatile organic Se species include dimethyl selenide (CH3SeCH3), dimethyl diselenide (CH3SeSeCH3), and methaneselenol (CH3SeH), and will undergo rapid atmospheric oxidation. To better constrain the fate of atmospheric Se compounds, high-level ab initio electronic structure calculations were performed to estimate the thermodynamic properties of 11 gaseous Se species (HSe•, H2Se, CH2Se, CH3SeH, •CH2SeH, CH3Se•, CH3SeSe•, CH3SeCH3, CH3Se•CH2, CH3SeSeCH3, and CH3SeSe•CH2) using their atomization reactions. Several corrections were applied to provide highly accurate calculated standard enthalpies of formation at 298 K, ΔfH°298 K. Standard molar entropy at 298 K, S°298 K, and heat capacity, Cp(T) over the temperature range 300–1500 K, from vibrational, translational, and external rotation contributions were computed using statistical thermodynamics based on the vibrational frequencies and structures obtained at the CCSD(T)/aVTZ level of theory. Hindered rotational contributions to S°298 K and Cp(T) were calculated from the energy levels, where the internal rotation potential was calculated at the MP2/aVTZ level of theory. The bond dissociation energies at 298 K for H–Se, Se–Se, and C–Se bonds in the Se molecules were derived from their calculated ΔfH°298 K values. The same protocol was applied to O and S species for comparison with Se. Their ΔfH°298 K, S°298 K, and Cp(T) values were in good agreement with the corresponding available literature data. This work provided the first thermodynamic properties for the organic Se species. The data obtained in this work could be used in chemical-transport models to assess the fate of atmospheric Se and its speciation unravelling the Se biogeochemical cycles.

Reactivity of hydroxyl radicals with neonicotinoid insecticides: mechanism and changes in toxicity - Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences
The reactivity of hydroxyl radicals (HO·) towards three neonicotonoid insecticides, namely imidacloprid, thiacloprid and acetamiprid was investigated. These radicals were generated by photolysis of H2O2 solutions. Flash photolysis experiments were used to determine the rate constants of 5.5 × 1010 M−1s−1, 6 × 1010 M−1s−1, and 7.5 × 1010 M−1s−1, for the reactions of HO· with acetamiprid, imidacloprid, and thiacloprid, respectively. Continuous irradiation experiments in the absence and presence of H2O2 allowed the identification and toxicity evaluation of the primary photo- and oxidation products of the insecticides. In all cases, the less toxic 6-chloronicotinic acid was found to be the major product at higher degrees of oxidation. The results reported here indicate that the half life of the insecticides due to their reaction with HO· radicals in natural aquatic reservoirs may vary between 5 h and 19 days, and therefore the hydroxyl radical-mediated oxidation may be a significant abiotic elimination route. However, elimination of the insecticide under such conditions might not improve the quality of the contaminated water, as the primary products of degradation still show considerable toxicity to Vibrio fischeri assays.

Read our last paper just released @acs.org Theoretical Study of the Reaction of Hydrogen Selenide with the Cl• Atom and the •OH Radical, and Differences with the Behavior of Other Hydrogen Chalcogenides | The Journal of Physical Chemistry A pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
pubs.acs.org
Theoretical Study of the Reaction of Hydrogen Selenide with the Cl• Atom and the •OH Radical, and Differences with the Behavior of Other Hydrogen Chalcogenides
Hydrogen selenide, H2Se, is the third-row analog of hydrogen sulfide, H2S, and water, H2O. While there is ample thermochemical and kinetic information about the reactions of the latter two species, few experimental or theoretical data are available on H2Se. In this work, we use high-level post-Hartree–Fock methods to study the reaction of H2Se with two of the most abundant atmospheric radical species, the Cl• atom and the •OH radical, H2Se + Cl• → HSe• + HCl H2Se + •OH → HSe• + H2O We used the SVECV-f12 composite quantum chemical method to study the stability of adducts and transition states, as well as the barriers for the transformations. It was found that a correct representation of the barrierless adduct is crucial for a correct description of the reaction’s kinetics, and we present in this paper the first theoretical determination of the reaction coefficient of H2Se with Cl• in the literature, obtaining a value of 5.7 × 10–10 cm3 molecule–1 s–1, in excellent agreement with the experimental determination of 5.5 × 10–10 cm3 molecule–1 s–1 at room temperature Additionally, using the same procedure, we obtained a value of 6.4 × 10–11 cm3 molecule–1 s–1 for the reaction with •OH, in this case slightly smaller than the only previous estimation of 7.2 × 10–11 cm3 molecule–1 s–1 obtained indirectly from similar reactions for sulfur compounds, in all cases at 298.15 K. Judging from the agreement of the theoretical and experimental rate coefficients in the case of the reaction with chlorine, we suggest that our value for the reaction with the hydroxyl radical is more accurate than the estimated one. A comparison of the dependence of the rate coefficients for H2S and H2Se as a function of the temperature shows some noticeable differences. A convex behavior of the T-dependence for the Cl• reaction at high temperatures was found, instead of the concave behavior found for sulfur. Nevertheless, this is not important in atmospheric chemistry conditions, and a sufficiently linear region was found with the expression, k(Cl•) = 1.6 × 10–10 exp (0.7/RT) cm3 molecule–1 s–1. The reaction with •OH is even more complicated, with nonlinear tail at high (combustion) and low (stratosphere) temperatures, while the region important in tropospheric chemistry could be fitted with the Arrhenius equation k(•OH) = 5.9 × 10–12 exp (1.4/RT) cm3 molecule–1 s–1. Using our theoretically determined kinetic data, we were also able to calculate the atmospheric lifetime of H2Se as 2.6 h, considerably shorter than that of H2S (12.2 h).
