Which one do you mean? "Contradictory results" is different, isn't it? www.biorxiv.org/submit-a-man...
ARTICLE CATEGORIES

Articles in bioRxiv are categorized as New Results, Confirmatory Results, or Contradictory Results. Please select the category that best describes your findings.

New Results is most appropriate for articles that describe an advance in a field.
Confirmatory Results should be selected if the findings largely replicate and confirm previously published work.
Contradictory Results should be selected if the studies largely replicate experimental approaches used in previously published work but the results contradict and/or do not support it.

The stone-and-wood find is thought to be a fragment of the ramparts of Lutetia – the ancient name for Paris – built by the Gallic Parisii tribe which lived along the river Seine in the Iron Age.

Oh... Missing in the NYT description is the fact that Kadlec is the author of an idiosyncratic, weird and, should I specify it, unsupported lab leak scenario for the origin of Covid-19. In his version, SARS-CoV-2 was made by Chinese military during the development of a neurological bioweapon
The agreement was signed by Dr. Bhattacharya and Dr. Robert Kadlec at the Defense Department. Dr. Kadlec previously served as assistant secretary for preparedness and response at the Department of Health and Human Services and played a central role in Operation Warp Speed, the federal government’s effort to rapidly develop vaccines and therapeutics against Covid-19

@cenmag.bsky.social and @science.org did mention the retraction though cen.acs.org/education/sc... www.science.org/content/arti...
A team led by João Miguel Alves-Nunes of the University of São Paulo won this year’s Biology Ig Nobel “for gently stepping on various parts of various venomous snakes—repeatedly, at various temperatures at various times of day—to try to learn what does and what does not induce a venomous snake to bite a human,” according to the award citation. While wearing safety boots, the researchers lightly laid a foot down on or near 116 Bothrops jararaca venomous pit vipers. They found that younger and smaller snakes tend to bite more often and that the snakes tend to bite during the daytime, in warm weather, and when stepped on. The controversial study was retracted following concerns about the paper’s animal work (Sci. Rep. 2024, DOI: 10.1038/s41598-025-88686-x).

The Editors have retracted this Article.

After publication, concerns were raised about the animal work reported in this paper. The Animal Ethics Committee of Butantan Institute confirmed that the approval granted to the Authors for their research on snakes (Bothrops jararaca) did not include newborn snakes or the use of the “soft stepping” method.

All authors disagree with this retraction.

An early version of a lab leak scenario notes that MBCS in H5N1 are acquired in high density poultry farms, claims that this is the only way they emerge, and links that to serial passage in a lab for SARS-CoV-2 doi.org/10.1002/bies...

This furin cleavage site, which is poly or multibasic by definition
since its composed of multiple basic amino acids, is an important virulence feature observed to have been acquired by fusion proteins of avian influenza viruses and Newcastle Disease Virus either grown under experimental conditions or isolated from commercial animal farms-settings that mimic the conditions of serial laboratory passage. In fact, no influenza virus with a furin cleavage site has ever been found in nature, 3) and it is a feature that has been thoroughly investigated in the literature since it appears to allow the influenza viruses that carry it to establish a systemic multiorgan infection using different cell types including nerve cells, 3) is correlated with high pathogenicity, and also plays a key role in overcoming the species barrier.!*) More gen-erally, despite the fact that not all serially passed viruses have demonstrated an increase in pathogenicity, the fact remains that every highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, defined by having a furin cleavage site, has either been found on commercial poultry farms that create the pseudo-natural conditions necessary for serial passage, or created in laboratories with gain-of-function serial passage experiments.

Important to remind people of the wild conspiracy theory - and accusations - in there: a University of North Carolina (UNC) lab studying ENaCα would have told Ralph Baric (UNC) about it who would have told his collaborators in China. Still incredible to me that someone accepted to have this printed
In addition, the research team would also have some familiarity with the FCS sequence and the FCS-dependent activation mechanism of human ENaC α (19), which was extensively characterized at UNC (17, 18).

In his recently published book, Quay claims that BANAL-20-52 is fake as well -- but he does not show why nor why a Laotian-French team and Institut Pasteur would want to fake a bat coronavirus genome sequence. Anyway, it's the typical conspiratorial trick: ignoring contradictory information. ▫️6/7
"The viruses supposedly from nature that are most closely related to SARS‑CoV‑2 are RaTG13—claimed to be from a bat-fecal specimen collected in an abandoned mine in the southern Chinese province of Yunnan, 1,205 miles from Wuhan—and a series of viruses called BANAL, which stands for a bat anal swab, which came from caves in Laos, about 1,777 miles by train to Wuhan.

As I will show here, these viruses carry the marks of laboratry manipulation, taking them out of the natural-spillover equation. [p. 141-142]"

In late 2024, Steven Quay revived the HIV claim, stating that the inserts were not found in "pre-pandemic" sarbecoviruses. It's a common leaker trick (Alina Chan would also often use it) to suggest that no post-2020 genome can be trusted because "the Chinese" have manipulated data. ▫️4/7
Here I examine the regions of the spike protein that bind to fibrin, fibrinogen, or both. The N-terminus of
the spike protein contains the three strongest binding peptides and surprisingly, these regions are also the
three insertions in the protein sequence that are unique to SARS-CoV-2 and not found in natural
sarbecoviruses. All pre-pandemic sarbecoviruses have either a partial deletion in these regions or have
protein amino acid substitutions that are non-conserved and therefore would not support fibrin binding.

Flo Débarre @flodebarre.eurosky.social · 09/08/2026
The claim was almost immediately debunked -- some inserts were not actually inserts, and the link to HIV was clearly a coincidence. archive.ph/hCFPA In France, the claim had a second life with Luc Montagnier, 2008 Nobel Prize winner for the codiscovery of HIV (cf. quoted post in #1) ▫️3/7

Based on the content of my mentions, I feel like I need to further debunk crazy #nCoV2019 / HIV conspiracy preprint. This is a thread doing so. 1/9

This paper proposes that there are 4 short "insertions" in the spike protein in #nCoV2019 copied from HIV. Yesterday, I showed that the proposed inserts are tiny strings that randomly match a whole bunch of things. 2/9

QT:
Trevor Bedford @trvrb These short inserts do indeed exist in #nCoV2019 relative to its closest sequenced relative (BetaCoV/bat/Yunnan/RaTG13/2013, seen here https://nextstrain.org/groups/blab/sars-like-cov). However, a simple BLAST of such short sequences shows match to a huge variety of organisms. No reason to conclude HIV.

A conclusion that the pathophysiology of long COVID is based on the insertion of spike protein motifs with sequence homology that mimic the HIV gp120 protein motif properties, and that these SARS-CoV-2 motifs are not found in the sarbecovirus subgenus strongly suggests that these inserts were design features in the synthetic assembly of SARS-CoV-2.
