wild how we're getting a socialized Faces of Death before healthcare, college, free school lunches, or first world public transit.

My pop punk listening days are behind me, but on the rare occasion when I get a hankering for it, I'll put on "Crushcrushcrush" or "Emergency".

Not my favorite take on the character (that would probably be Mark Waid's Birthright, which leans Silver Age but seemed to borrow more than a few elements from the Byrne version), but a step forward.

I have my issues with Byrne's characterization of Superman, but at least the character went from having no consistent personality beyond "do-gooder" (like all other DC heroes in the Silver Age) to having a consistent (if at times unpleasant) personality.

Just curious, is all. I don't really care about Che one way or the other.

I always associated it with the 2000s because that's when I first started noticing them and became aware of who he was, but a while back I read an issue of The Invisibles in which King Mob wore one so they must've been around since at least the mid '90s.

D.C. is a good deal colder in the winter and way, way hotter during summertime. I think Seattle might be closer climatewise, but London winters are a bit harsher

I've watched about three episodes and the only one that stuck with me was a send-up of the Avengers that flipped back and forth between "Mystery Men-esque affectionate parody" and "The Boys spec script with Rick and Morty in it".

I cannot stress enough that ICE is acting the way cops have acted for years. These are just "starlight tours" for Indigenous teens applied to the rest of the population.

Artists from the '80s and '90s loved to reference Fred Astaire for some reason, I'm sure there are many, MANY more I'm not thinking of.

Never heard this song before, but the moment he sang "Vince Hillaire / Freddie Flintstone…" I knew the next name he mentioned would be Fred Astaire. A little too obvious. Now I'm trying to think of what other songs mention Mr Astaire. There was that one ABC tune, otherwise I'm drawing a blank.

I saw this painting in London ~15 years ago. It is indeed very impressive, blown up and jutting out from a wall, and it probably meets the bare minimum of being "transformative" to dodge actual copyright law. But the moment I saw it began my active *disrespect* for Lichtenstein.

I mean yeah, a 12 year old is probably not gonna produce something genuinely fun OR insightful. I guess I'm just not a fan of the term shlock. I've heard way too many people use it in a way that feels so… dismissive. Though in some cases it's very much spot on.

I love low art! I love rock music and super-hero comics and detective novels and action flicks! I earnestly wholeheartedly love that stuff. Low art's where it's at!

Flavio Sette @flaviosette.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
And personally I don't approach super-hero comics or sci-fi novels from the lens of "lol, this is such garbage". Maybe I'm alone here, but hey.

I'm sorry, but fuck that. There is a genuine craft to writing genre fare! As long as the author(s) pour their heart into what they're making (even if financial considerations also play a part) it has value.

The comic? It's Legends of the Dark Knight #159-161 by John Ostrander and David Lopez.

Yep, it was O'Neil. So says wikipedia anyway.
Batman writer and editor Dennis O'Neil has said that, figuratively, Batman's Gotham City is akin to "Manhattan below 14th Street at eleven minutes past midnight on the coldest night of November."

There's even a fun three-parter written by chi-town native John Ostrander in which Batman has to go to Chicago to investigate a case and is totally thrown by the differences between it and Gotham.

It's been basically New York stuck exactly as it was in 1977 ever since The Dark Knight Returns. But because Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were shot in Chicago, it's taken on some elements of the windy city.

It's not a favorite of mine, but I still appreciate that DeMatteis was tried to tell a story with a definite ending and to make Kraven into a more memorable character (which, much like Crisis, backfired big time, leading to many, many unnecessary sequels)

I remember enjoying it when I read it about five years ago. But I also recall feeling like I needed to fake an enthusiasm that I just didn't feel when discussing it with other nerds— ahem, fellow pictorial literature enthusiasts.

Flavio Sette @flaviosette.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
DeMatteis saw an opportunity to take a bad guy who's entire purpose in life was "I must best Spider-Man" and gave an interesting backstory and believable motivation. Along came Geoff Johns who went "oh, I didn't realize you could turn an old Silver Age villain into a psycho killer. Cool."

Flavio Sette @flaviosette.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I suppose. I mentioned it because KLH and Born Again are pretty much where the whole "bring back an old c-list villain, make him a sociopath, and have him ruin the hero's life" trend began.

Maybe it was inevitable, but still! 17 years is a long time. None of DC's other "reboots" have lasted that long.

Flavio Sette @flaviosette.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It wasn't until 2003 or so when Jeph Loeb started undoing all of Crisis' various changes in his Superman/Batman run (bringing back Supergirl, multi-colored Kryptonite variants, that old Silver Age story in which Thomas Wayne dressed up as Batman, and even Bat-Mite).

Flavio Sette @flaviosette.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
After Crisis, DC went through a period of about fifteen years in which it published some of the greatest super-hero comics of all time. And sure, Krypto came back in 2000, but otherwise the retcons introduced by Crisis held.
100
Flavio Sette @flaviosette.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Having said that, I disagree with commenters who claim that Crisis created more problems than it solved; before Crisis, DC was at death's door. The previous year, Warner had even tried to license their characters to Marvel.

Consciously or otherwise, the deaths of the Flash, Supergirl, Superman, Green Arrow, and Jean Grey (New X-Men version) have all been attempts to replicate the success of those stories.

Flavio Sette @flaviosette.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Similarly, The Night Gwen Stacy Died may have come out first, but the ultimate "shock death" stories in comics are the Dark Phoenix Saga and the death of Elektra.

Flavio Sette @flaviosette.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Sure, Secret Wars came out first, but it was Crisis that set the template for all events to follow: world-ending stakes, major character deaths, tie-ins, etc.

I was listening to an episode of the Iron age of comics podcast in which the hosts covered Crisis. They argued that it was the ur-event comic and the more I thought about it the more I agreed.

He's Rick Springfield, not Ministry. Hell, even Ministry were making bland, overproduced synth-pop at the time (yes, I know they started out as Joy Division wannabes before getting signed). At most he could've aimed for side two of Hounds of Love instead and made a different song the lead single.
