when the star on the tree is an actual star lol A NASA photo of the Christmas Tree Cluster 🎄
A NASA photo of NGC 2264- a cosmic tree that has been named the Christmas Tree Cluster which lives in our galaxy about 2,500 light-years from Earth. It contains baby stars that are between 1 and 5 million years old 🥺

you are looking at the future for our sun. this is a planetary nebula, the final stage of life for a sun-like star. [image credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, R. Wade et al.]

This dusty galaxy is also known as the Black Eye Galaxy.|NASA|
This image taken with the Hubble Space Telescope features NGC 4826, otherwise known as M64— a spiral galaxy located 17 million light-years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices (Berenice’s Hair). This galaxy is often referred to as the “Black Eye” or “Evil Eye” Galaxy because of the dark band of dust that sweeps across one side of its bright nucleus. M64 is known by astronomers for its strange internal motion.

Hubble's sharpest view of the Orion Nebula
This stunning Hubble image offers the sharpest view of the Orion Nebula ever obtained. Created using 520 different Hubble exposures taken in multiple wavelengths of light, this mosaic contains over one billion pixels. Hubble imaged most of the nebula, but ground-based images were used to fill in the gaps in its observations. The orange color in the image can be attributed to hydrogen, green represents oxygen, and the red represents both sulfur and observations made in infrared light.

NGC 6302: The "Butterfly Nebula" Credit:NASA
Hubble was recently retrained on NGC 6302, known as the "Butterfly Nebula," to observe it across a more complete spectrum of light, from near-ultraviolet to near-infrared, helping researchers better understand the mechanics at work in its technicolor "wings" of gas. The observations highlight a new pattern of near-infrared emission from singly ionized iron, which traces an S shape from lower left to upper right. This iron emission likely traces the central star system’s most recent ejections of gas, which are moving at much faster speeds than the previously expelled mass.

The star or stars at its center are responsible for the nebula's appearance. In their death throes, they have cast off layers of gas periodically over the past couple thousand years. The "wings" of NGC 6302 are regions of gas heated to more than 36,000 degrees Fahrenheit that are tearing across space at more than 600,000 miles an hour.

NGC 6302 lies between 2,500 and 3,800 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius.

Image of a star that exploded 320 years ago: Cassiopeia A (Infrared + X ray). This image was presented on AAS Nova today as JWST revealed new features in it. 🔭 🧪
This image of the famous supernova remnant Cassiopeia A combines X-ray, optical, and infrared observations. The new infrared data from JWST revealed fascinating structures. Remember the eclipse back in April? Since eclipses are rare I practiced camera settings and timing... then changed travel plans, watched the weather like a hawk, and ended up driving quite a bit. It all worked out. I'm proudest of this image and would love to do projects like this more often.
A scene with inky darkness. The moon blots out the sun and ring of fire appears in the sky. The horizon looks like sunset and the golden color reflects in the lake. Three people in the bottom right corner look up. They are in silhouette.

star clusters are so beautiful ✨
Bright blue stars are in a cluster at the center of the image. They are surrounded by a shell of brownish and burnt orange dust and gas. The shell has ridges that reach towards the stars like teeth. A number of more distant galaxies also appear in the background.A grouping of large, glowing, and purplish stars dominate the image’s center. Dark ridges of gas and dust are visible around them, with more background stars crowding the view.Several bright-white, bluish, and orange stars shine with diffraction spikes, interspersed throughout dark dust. Particularly dark regions of gas and dust are seen near the lower left.A dense cluster of bright stars. The core of the cluster is to the left and has a distinct group of blue stars. Surrounding the core are a multitude of stars in warmer colors. These stars are very numerous near the core and become more sparse, as well as more small and distant, out to the sides of the image. A few larger stars also stand in the foreground near the edges of the image.
