I keep thinking this when I read @hcrichardson.bsky.social 's newsletters about how many states were added to protect or expand dominance of the Senate. Packing the Supreme Court is amateur hour; real pros pack the Senate.

I wanna say it was 2002 when Adidas and Nike somehow both decided to put their professional runners in solid indigo blue tops and black shorts and without looking for the logo on the shoulder there was no way of telling them apart (and in some races they made up 90% of the lead pack)

One of the things you learn covering any of these global championships (Olympics, World Championships, various flavors of World Cup) is that unless you are laser-focused on a single team or event, regular sleep is impossible and you need every opportunistic nap.

I feel like nearly every book which projects a "we solve the climate crisis" future - including several billed as "hopepunk" - glosses over a bunch of off-camera killing. Nick Fuller Googins' "The Great Transition" takes as its central problem whether climate-motivated assassination is required.

The turnaround time from hearing about the protest to heading out the door with a sign has gone from a few weeks to about an hour in suburban Boston.

Am I right that you're responding to and expanding on this? (The "Homeland" branding has always felt excessively nationalist and creepy to me and I am disappointed to find those premonitions were correct.) bsky.app/profile/than...

The most touching part, honestly, is what this couple *didn't* do (at least as far as the article shows): they didn't try to "fix" him, and they didn't put conditions on their support. They must have been all-star parents, too, on that evidence.

I read the Aru Shah series (Roshani Chokshi is the author) to my daughter *three times* - after we finished the first run-through she immediately wanted me to go back to the beginning and start over. (And I was willing to. They're good books.)

This joyful celebration of books on the lawn of the Sandwich Library made me think of all of you out there fighting the good fight to keep books in the hands of us all.
The outline of a person holding a book over their head is created of colorful lights

The person is next to a tree on a lawn that is set off by a short stone wall. Trees in winter guise are across the back

Yes. I think people who learn this "guideline" learn it relatively young, test it on their own age, and don't question it as they get older. `0.5n + 7` - as n gets larger, the 0.5n term becomes more and more significant while the 7 is, well, constant.

John Sampson of the Weakerthans has a song about a runaway cat: "Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure". The refrain is about the cat's name: "The sound you found for me." And at the end, he repeats, "I can't remember the sound that you found for me." 😭 theweakerthans.bandcamp.com/track/virtut...

So it takes some very specific circumstances to get a Frenchman and a Swede on the 10,000m podium, but it is absolutely proof that the non-African countries should keep developing and entering athletes instead of just conceding those medals. Because when that door opens, you want to be ready.

American Olympic medalist Grant Fisher in 8th was just over 2 seconds away from gold, which might as well be a blanket finish in a 25-lap race that lasts 29 minutes.

The Kenyans and Ethiopians (and occasional Eritreans, Tanzanians, or Mo Farah) have gotten so used to the success of their "burn off everyone else and then sort out the medals in the last lap" strategy that apparently in the hot conditions in Tokyo, they neglected the "burn off everyone else" part.

There's this popular series of mid-grade light fantasy books (not going to drop the name, but it features elves) which started out VERY WELL, but now there are almost ten books, all with cliffhangers, and it seems possible it will never end. Competent writing, infuriating plotting.

Having this dispute with an AI-pilled running group member proposing workouts he got from ChatGPT. I keep coming back with, "Has ChatGPT ever done that workout? Can it explain how it's going to benefit us, or why that's the right workout, or is it just spitting out workout-shaped words?"

Runners and swimmers will always talk about hitting their personal best even if they don’t finish first in a race. Infuriating for journalists trying to cover a race, but truly a mindset everybody should have. (Especially weirdo politicians trying to bully kids instead of improving people’s lives!)

This is fantastic. See, back in the early '00s I worked at Sinauer Associates, and as part of my job I was the front-line phone and email support for PAUP. I do *not* know phylogenetic analysis; mostly once I got users to a successful installation, I was done. But that thing was a beast.
