Southeast Victoria was very active last week, first with a magnitude 3.7 near Woodside on Thursday, then the roughly 10x larger magnitude 4.8 near Korumburra at 2am Saturday. There's at least 100 aftershocks to the latter quake that are still being processed. Download Seismoscope for more details.

The marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna) looks like a ferret dressing up as a cheetah for Halloween. They're native to a semi-desert grassland strip from Eastern Europe to Central Asia. Like a skunk, they can spray a foul-smelling fluid from anal glands. Let's talk about them. (📷: Petra Prager)

A marbled polecat photo from Petra Prager. It looks almost exactly like a ferret, but the arched back is sort of orange with brown dots on it similar to a cheetah, and the head has a white stripe that reminds me of a skunk, with a long floofy tail and dark limbs. This one looks alert and at rest.

There is an AgVic site which purports to show you bird flu sites by postcode, but (big but) there’s no legend or way to identify the postcode. So Vic has these coloured patches but no way to determine what postcodes those patches belong to.

Exactly! I wanted to know if the birds in my back yard might become infected or if there was another cause. The bird deaths were reported on the news, and I waited 2 weeks so a result might have been found. Why would they not want me (/us) to know? Seems pointless.

I tried to find out what killed the 5 ravens found in a park near me, and got no answer. Council didn’t know, local MP’s office didn’t know and AgVic wouldn’t tell me! Outright said, “We don’t give out that info”! Just an FYI.
