Maybe if more writers made do or got creative when they needed images, the visual language of modern books wouldn't be so samey. Lost count of the number of different "anime inspired" main-character-as-cover-art covers I've seen on here

Society parried the ozone layer, acid rain, and Y2K back to back and instead of going "wow, parrying is badass" a lot of people went "society didn't even get hit so I guess there's no need to learn how to parry" and instantly took a thousand hits

I don't want "infinite personalised music" that sounds wank, I want to hear the noises some mentally ill recluses thought sounded good over a breakbeat.

My horrible violent novella got accepted to #SFINCS4!!!! Honestly stoked I made it this far, I was pretty late to submit something so I'm just happy to be on the list. I hope I meet some cool writers during judging.

I'd absolutely love to see anyone near the levers of power being genuinely clear-eyed about the risks instead of just swallowing and regurgitating hyperbolic press releases from AI corps

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

For any confused Americans, dogging is a traditional British term for walking the dog, if you're ever over here and see someone with their pet make sure to tell them how much you love dogging. That nothing makes you happier than seeing that wagging tail and panting mouth out on the heath.

To Brit Euphemisms, I'd say there's almost certainly an element of taking delight in how gruesome you can make them, it's a source of humour in addition to the cultural squeamishness. A guy I know calls his dick "the vomiting milkman", you don't get there without enjoying the wordplay of it a bit.

Absolutely agreed. Speaking as a writer too, what can you do about a review like that? You have to be really careful in how you respond without looking like a bully and making an annoying situation into a PR problem

No doubt, I was thinking of Goodreads when I wrote my last reply.

Without knowing where you were reading this review, I'd hazard that it's maybe downstream of the internet giving everyone a voice. With no barriers to entry, there's no need for consensus on how to write a review

Interestingly, I've noticed AI fans approach almost every interaction like this. They're hilariously thin-skinned, seething at the indication that you're not going to fawn over them. Makes them easy to spot early, at least.

"it doesn't make sense *to me*" and she never once stopped to think if she just might be stupid. The lack of self awareness from these cretins isn't surprising, but it's still disappointing

Yeah, it was subtextual. The post relies on the assumption that a reader is 1. Going to read the article and 2. Aware of the usual MO of sextortion rings.

I read it more like "men also need to be on their guard, while sextortion rings usually target women that is not the case this time"

Right, okay everybody, I’ve had a lot of meetings and talks this week and I have to share some top line thoughts. Things are quite a bit worse than i am usually willing to share with people because panic does no good. It’s kinda bad. The baddies have the wind at their back. No denying that.

Have you talked about your book yet today?! Drop and give us Title: Nil's Shroud Genre: cyberpunk/splatterpunk Word count: I can't remember, like 29k-ish Funniest moment: The number three adaptor (you'll get it if ya read it) 🔗: fixeroptional.itch.io/nils-shroud
The cover of my novella, Nil's Shroud. A glitchy, harsh, black and white picture of a wrench smeared with an unidentified dark fluid. Teeth and wires are also scattered.

no, see, that's in fact extremely NOT what you are, that's just a cute poetic metaphor. this is an extreme diminishment of what a human is (also dualism again, "you" aren't only inside your skull but also the skull and all the other body parts)
Plus like, I don’t know, sometimes I see people say actually the models don’t do anything because it’s everything they’re trained on, and sure, but also I’m the sum of my own experiences and observations and stuff too, not just the stuff inside my skull.

Skill issue. Right wingers have been attempting to make art, many of their films have been very heavily publicised, as have a few of their books. The only tyranny at play is that of public taste. No one wants shitty art, sorry.

Speaks more to his own delusion that humans are the sole organism capable of thought magic — he claims not to believe this, but the rest of his post highlights that 1. He does and 2. He doesn't understand thought well enough to recognise it in something that isn't human.

Haven't found a surefire way to get through to a mark that I'm trying to unwork, usually a conciliatory tone and gentle prodding to examine their source does the trick but, as today will attest, not always.
