Beautiful piece! It recalls to me Tom Lea’s classic western landscapes and Maxfield Parrish’s use of texture and illumination.

Superb take. It dovetails (for me at least) with the false idea of “let the generals loose so they can win the war.” As Clausewitz wrote with erudition, war is ultimately a political instrument of national objectives. Those strategic imperatives must be defined by political leaders.

I'm currently listening to the audible version of #RotK, narrated by the great Andy Serkis. This is one of my favourite passages in #LotR. I've read it so many times, yet am still deeply moved by the reunion of two soldiers after battle. Pp. 892-93 of the 1991 edition. @gracekhuri.bsky.social

The Lost Battalion was an American unit that became separated from the American advance and surrounded by German forces. From Oct 2-7 1918 they resisted German attacks until an American force was able to relieve them. Of about 554 men 197 were lost, 150 taken prisoner and the remaining 194 rescued.

I recently picked up a copy of “Over the Top” by Arthur Lambert. The author served with the HAC on the Western Front. My copy originally belonged to Horace G. Sennitt, who was in the same unit. He carefully made notations on the margins throughout the book. #WW1 #FWW #WesternFront #BritishArmy
