I'm almost finished with the brilliant memoir "Over the Top" by Arthur Lambert. This is an amusing vignette he relates about a prisoner in the Italian campaign that occurred in the autumn of 1918. It speaks for itself. Enjoy! #History #WW1 #FWWHist #Italy #HAC ##BEF #booksky

I’m not completely sure this meme applies to your post, but it was an excuse to use it. In any event, I wish you were wronger in your opinion. Or maybe it’s I wish you (and Marx) were less right.

Neuve Chapelle, 1915. Rushing the German Trenches by Fred Roe: study for one of four pictures painted for the officers' mess of the Royal Garhwal Rifles. See alt text for more details. #IWM #IEF #FWW #WesternFront #India #IndianArmy
Illustrator Fred Roe completed this study for a large painting of the Royal Garhwal Rifles on the first day of the Neuve Chapelle attack on 10 March 1915. Two battalions of the Garhwals participated in this operation, boith in the Meerut Division. Although I can't be sure, I believe the original painting resides today in a battalion officers' mess of the 39th Garhwal Rifles, Indian Army. Here is an excerpt from Sir James Willcocks' book "With the Indians in France." Published in 1920, the book details the exploits and history of Indian Expeditionary Force A. Sir James focussed on the years 1914-15 in his history. This extract is from pp. 210-11.

I'm currently listening to the audible version of #RotK, narrated by the great Andy Serkis. This is one of my favourite passages in #LotR. I've read it so many times, yet am still deeply moved by the reunion of two soldiers after battle. Pp. 892-93 of the 1991 edition. @gracekhuri.bsky.social

I recently picked up a copy of “Over the Top” by Arthur Lambert. The author served with the HAC on the Western Front. My copy originally belonged to Horace G. Sennitt, who was in the same unit. He carefully made notations on the margins throughout the book. #WW1 #FWW #WesternFront #BritishArmy

"Saving the Guns at Le Cateau." Under Captain Douglas Reynolds, VC, gunners of the 37th Battery, Royal Field Artillery rescue a howitzer under heavy German fire at Le Cateau, France on 26 August 1914. Never forget, Mark Note: see alt text for more information #WW1 #LeCateau #VC #History #FWWHist
"Saving the Guns at Le Cateau" by Bryan de Grineau, ca. 1916, Alamy Image Library.

In this dramatic illustration, gunners of the 37th Battery, Royal Field Artillery rescue a QF 4.5-inch howitzer under heavy German fire at the Battle of Le Cateau, France on 26 August 1914. Captain Douglas Reynolds and a team of volunteers valiantly retrieved one of their artillery pieces, resulting in the award of three Victoria Crosses.

Captain Reynolds VC was later promoted to major, and died in February 1916 from wounds received in a gas shell explosion. He is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Etaples, France. This portrait of Captain Reynolds VC is part of the National Army Museum collection.

"The Runner" by James Fraser Scott, 1919, Australian War Memorial.
Communications in World War I were not nearly as advanced as the weaponry employed by the combatant nations. Runners performed an absolutely vital function in combat. Facing danger at every turn, they delivered vital information back and forth from the front lines.

Here we see a runner on a wet night, likely heading back towards his headquarters with an update. Passing him is a working party carrying duckboards. In the distance, an artillery barrage brackets the trenches with fire. This was a scene that occurred countless times on the Western Front during the Great War.
Never forget, Mark
