We are all shocked by a white man who says he doesn't care for politics.

40 years ago (October 7, 1986), Congress designated the rose as the floral emblem of the USA. This inarguably beautiful flower has many native species (often fragrant) that are irresistible pollinator magnets & should be a feature of every garden. Make plans to plant a native rose! #nativeplants 🌱

I love the decisiveness of weasels. They can just make up their minds that you're not scary & POOF, you don't matter anymore. Watch a marten figure out I'm not a threat and come right on down. I'm not convinced I could beat this predatory gymnast in a fight in thick timber. #SpookyNature 🦊

It's spawning season for brook trout! These little shits are invasive in the western U.S. but it's not their fault and they might as well look GLAMOROUS while they do it. 🐟🌎 *I had to delete and reskeet this photo because of an autocorrect typo I wasn't willing to live with.

The days are getting shorter, so the older girls are looking quite wretched as they just bald chunk their way through molting season. I'm always entertained to see which chickens choose catastrophic molting & which ones try not to draw attention to themselves by discreetly losing a few feathers. 🪶🌱

The only time I've ever (sort of) paid for A.I. was a time I saw a book for sale on Amazon that was such a blatant and audacious ripoff of Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive magnum opus that I couldn't believe it was possible. I paid $9 as an experiment to see if it was real.
A copy of Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings sits on a coffee table next to another book called The Way of Kings: a New Dawn by some made up author named Glenda Hidleston. The covers both have very similar and hilariously dramatic art of a caped guy with a big sword under a turbulent sky.

One time while I was electrofishing in a tributary of the St. Joe River I captured an Idaho giant salamander that was eating a water shrew. It spit it out into my net. I was very disappointed to have not been able to photograph it while it was in the salamander's mouth, but I can't blame it. 🦊🐍

Accidentally stumbled within 10 yards of a black bear yesterday during my survey. Thankfully it didn't see me. No harm, no foul. Although I learned something about myself: zero sense of self preservation. I didn't even consider preparing my bear spray. I just got out my phone. This is how I die. 🦊

The apparition that is welcome to haunt fall: Virginia creeper 🌱 #nativeplants ? Feels like a "neonative" to the western U.S. similar to Alaskan mule deer or PNW barred owls. It's native to the continent & we've facilitated its spread, but it's not like...cheatgrass. Sometimes a problem.
Palmately compound Virginia creeper leaves begin to turn red along with the bright red stems and deep purple berries of the fruit clusters.

I was admiring the tenacity of this rainbow today, who managed to survive heron predation (you can see a pair of linear bruises on each side of its caudal peduncle), but then the tenacious little bugger wriggled out of my grip, flew through the air, and landed in the release bucket. Spiny lizards are so chill, I love them. This one has almost certainly never seen a human & will never see one again, but it does not care. I felt bad for it trying to survive in the middle of a half million acre wildfire so I brought it a grasshopper I caught in a small unburned patch. 🐍 #invert

I suspect the primary reason that we haven't already seen a trucker strike is because the vast majority of them voted for him. They're ashamed & just taking their medicine. Hopefully they'll take their chance to reverse course & join in politically emasculating these incompetent blowhards this Nov.
