Java was actually invented in 1867 by Moon Macrosystems under the name "Tea" but it never caught on due to various reasons. Sun then rebranded and subsequently re-released it in 1996 as the Java we all know and love.

Vertex shaders can't modify how much geometry there is, only where its drawn, and even if they could they get applied too late in the pipeline to reap many of the rewards of LODs

It's probably something about viewer retention, the only way to restart a reel is by scrolling to the next one and back which would force you to re-watch all of the beginning stuff you'd want to skip past if you wanted to see something in the middle again

godl v1.4.0, my #godot version manager, just released! It comes with the new Qt Widgets frontend and a new godot-cpp project template. Try out the AppImage, available on Codeberg: codeberg.org/fishn/godl/

fishy @fishies.dev · 16/08/2026
You can see this in existing GDScript development — nested types are universally wanted and everyone can agree on an implementation, but once something gets to be more complicated (like traits/interfaces!) where there's no one right way to implement it, discussions grind to a halt because everyone

Beyond just complicating the language, it also creates more room for conflict. PL people always try to find the "best" way to do something which directly counters the ethos of GDScript, that it's good enough for 90% of use cases

Developers that create custom file dialogs that only ever implement half of the host's default file dialog's features need to be taken to... a grassy field full of flowers and rainbows (I'm looking at you Blender)

fishy @fishies.dev · 15/08/2026
GDScript is the only language I've used where it feels like it wants me to just Do Things rather than worrying so much about how to do it optimally. And the quick dev cycle from instant compilation and hot reload definitely helps with that
040
fishy @fishies.dev · 15/08/2026
Generics could be nice but they also tend to skew more toward the bikesheddy abstract PL theory side of things, which isn't great for a language whose entire purpose is to make it simple to do things

Besides, if you're trying to iterate from zero to N in a for loop, you can iterate over the int directly rather than using the range function
010
fishy @fishies.dev · 15/08/2026
range isn't inclusive on both ends, it's the standard [min, max)

Also, you can do the same thing with built-in types, it's just not a GDScript resource in that case (it's some hidden GDScriptNativeClass type)

You can even create new instances of the script! It's super handy for factory methods, and one of the major pillars my React-in-Godot project operates on

Timestamp labels just got a (minor) upgrade #godl, my Godot version manager! They now show a more precise time, up to two parts, if the inaccuracy after showing one is over a day.

If you recompile #godot often, consider installing the mold linker and adding `linker=mold` to your scons invocation. It cut my incremental recompilation times in half, from 20 seconds to 11 seconds
