There’s definitely an ideology at work in this: neoliberalism

What he meant was 'no one in my administration cared enough to do anything about it, as they were all doing the same'

Miliband at least is finally saying some of the right things about Gaza, but joining the dots to proscribing 'terrorist' organisations doesn't yet seem to have happened. But at least acknowledging the problems is a step towards perhaps fixing some of them

Thanks for your opinionated answer. But how can you know? Or do you just not want to believe that Reform light still be a force by then?

A sop to those who were gulled by the spivs, liars and fantasists, but can’t quite admit it to themselves

Expect a lot of bluster about sovereignty and betrayal, as there is no evidence they can summon to show that Brexit isn’t a failure

Even if it could be comprehensively disproved, the Japanese knotweed of ‘legitimate concerns’ is so thoroughly entangled in the media narrative that it would take years to root out

Interesting to note that the only way they can attribute 'success' to Labour policy is to frame it in the context of creating a different problem, without, of course, reflecting their own role in calling for that success.

Wilful, stubborn ignorance seems to be a defining characteristic of our times. In the age of ubiquitous smartphones and internet connectivity, it takes a special effort not to find out

too much of the legacy media is either Reform-friendly or simply uncritical enough to platform whatever nonsense Farage and Tice come out with. And most social media is overrun by trolls and bot farms, many run by hostile foreign actors

I don't want 'my news, my way' (looking at you @theguardian.com). I want THE news, YOUR way, and if I don't like your curation I will look elsewhere. The rest of the thread seems sound too.

This is what advertising and algorithms do: "it's all about YOU" From "your next train to London" to "your news, your way", it's all bollocks. It's not all about you. It's not your train. If you want any grasp of the world, you have to first realise that you are not the centre of it.

Strictly, we don't vote for the PM (unless the party leader is also your prospective MP) but of course people do think that way. One of the failings of our system, though presidential systems can also produce bad outcomes.

Trump may have wangled personal immunity via SCOTUS but the rest of his crew haven't. Maybe if it were explained to them how well the Nuremberg defence actually worked they'd start to act while they have time?

I was thinking more of what Putin might be weighing but those are very valid concerns

firstprinciples.bsky.social @firstprinciples.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Putin must be aware that there's a strong possibility that Trump will have his wings clipped at the mid-terms, and while that doesn't mean the US would behave any better in an Art 5 event, Trump may also be prevented from indulging his worst instincts (i.e. to do whatever Putin tells him to)

It's really only its political news reporting that's gone downhill as a result of Tory intervention. If it goes, we won't get anything half as good in its place. Just look at the enshittification of the streaming services, for example.

Can't help but feel that the UK's billionaire-owned press is largely responsible for our malaise, and a major obstacle to curing it, though outside interference from both Russia and the US doesn't help
