I planted the “definitely dead” Japanese Maple in a pot and ignored it for a month.
A thriving Japanese Maple.

Yesss a Middlemen mention
Screenshot of essay which reads: Take, for instance, the debut novel. In Middlemen, a recently published study of the literary agent, Laura B. McGrath coins the term debut phenomenon: “a carefully orchestrated publicity event, designed to turn an unknown, first-time author into a professional writer.” The engine of this transformation is the debut narrative, in which various details—biographical facts about the author, the heat of the bidding war, the heft of the marketing push—coalesce “into a unified whole, launching book and author as two mutually reinforcing products.” A splashy first novel, in other words, is not a freak weather event. It is a calculated bid that success can be manufactured if decision makers tell the right story.

I went from claying in a pricey, branded premises with corporate types sipping wine, to a council run, cheap as chips, premises in the suburban back blocks, to a falling apart disused factory in an industrial wasteland full of introverted masters. I’ve never earned less money, and felt more at home.

Exactly. Despite “he continued to pursue her, refusing to take no for an answer” being more often than not a red flag, that narrative lives on as romantic. A lot of what’s portrayed as “romantic love” in literature and film is concerning behaviour.

Pictures from Octobers past #Photography
a large farmhouse ruin from the back side, with a bare tree to the left. The sky is very blue with some white cloudsa brick wall below a wooden fence. On the wall are 4 child's handprints in a pinkish colour (likely white but showing brick colour through), and a blob of white paint to the right fairground buildings in the rain, with bright pink shuttersa person skimming a stone on the beach in the mist. They're in silhouette shot from a distance and some height, frozen in the motion of being about to throw. The whole picture is almost colourless with a yellowy tinge.

A modern hotel building with the word HOTEL in large letters atop it stands against a clear sky. The hotel has balconies and decorative rectangular windows. Overhead wires crisscross the frame, and parts of other buildings, streetlights, and traffic signals are visible.

That person you’re enamoured by within days/weeks/months of meeting them? They’re a stranger. It takes a long time to get to know someone. What you don’t know about them far outweighs what you do. Filling in those gaps with ideals is both tempting, and potentially very unwise.

Happy birthday to my Dad. Gone six years but still very much alive in my every day. I wear his work shirts in the studio now, and we’re slowly beginning to clear out the shed. I also have enough nails, screws, and bolts to last me a lifetime. Miss you Dad. x

The creation of a machine in the image of a human is a strange kind of extrospective introspection. To fear what we create (or are capable of creating) is to fear ourselves (and what we’re capable of).
