You want olden days? I’ll give you olden days! The Greenhouse Library v1, 10 August 2017. The first thing @dollyjorgensen.bsky.social and I did upon starting our jobs here was converting one of our offices to a library. And then we shared the other one. Got to make some sacrifices for community!
Long and skinny office with lots of books. Looks kind of inprovised…

Fantastic hike around Borebreen on our last day. A polar bear was spotted in the water this morning, but I missed it. A reason to come back, I guess.

Overlooking Adventdalen, with Longyearbyen and the Advent fjord at the end. Behind me, up on the mountain, Mine 7 (the last Norwegian coal mine to close in 1025) and the EISCAT radar station. Sadly the road was closed past where we stopped, so we couldn’t go all the way to the radars.

A bunch of common eiders (and some barnacle geese) made their nesting site right next to a husky kennel outside Longyearbyen. The Arctic foxes don’t like the dogs, so their nests are safer there. They were used to people.

Getting my bearings in Svalbard, where I’ll spend the next week on the 100+ year old schooner Noorderlicht up along the Western coast. Until departure: stout from the northernmost brewery in the world; all the museums in Longyearbyen; wildlife photo safari. And snow buntings, so pretty. Good stuff.

Last week I had surgery in Oslo - not a major one, but required full anaesthesia and all. Today I got the bill in the mail - 518 Norwegian kroner. This is one of the reasons I’m happy to pay my taxes here.

Foggy morning matches my brain as I head to campus for an early #envhist class. We’ll be talking about more-than-human history and glaciers. I’ll shake up the usual glacier repeat photography discussion by bringing in Peter Funch’s The Imperfect Atlas. Should be fun!

The Greenhouse Library and the hallway outside wrapped up like a Christmas present. If all goes to plan, we’ll get a new and non-leaky roof in January. And if it doesn’t to go according to plan … October?

The Christmas book pile is ambitious, but very very promising. And I have new reading/computer glasses that I need to test out properly, anything else would not take my workplace health and safety seriously.
Stack of books to be read. Ursula Le Guin, Carrier bag theory of fiction. Ian Nairn, Outrage. Donna Tartt, The Secret History. Claire-Louise Bennett, Big Kiss, Bye-Bye. Morag Rose, The Feminist Art of Walking. Adam Johnson, The Wayfinder. Marc Wilson, The Edge of Ruin. Jelewska & Krawczak, Nuclear Gaia. Quintin Lake, The Perimeter. Ying Ang, Fruiting Bodies.

Starting the weekend with Ævestaden on vinyl and a very foresty beer brewed with birch, sweet woodruff, and stinging nettle from Rygr, a brewery just a few train stops south of here. I need to look at two texts tonight, but that can wait. I also need this.

Surprisingly many people (and a dog!) showed up for the rephotography walk yesterday. Very happy to see how interested and enthusiastic people were. Most of them wanted to push on after the cold and windy stop at the tower - and we were rewarded with beautiful weather on the last bit of the walk.
