I read a couple hundred death penalty cases for a case once and I think you’d all be shocked at how often this happens. The death penalty is one of the cruelest things in our system, an obvious violation of the 8th amendment cruel and unusual punishment clause, but we just love to kill.

Is it verifiable and absurd?! yes! But the intentionality behind the human created nuttiness of it all is what makes stories like that enjoyable. I do not care what a computer chooses to do with a character based on replicating patterns in other stories. That kind of “thought” is not compelling.

I’m sure ai could absolutely replicate a choice like sending Outlander characters to the Caribbean to have a time traveling protagonist encounter most insanely improbable series of events but what makes that series enjoyable is knowing it’s a deliberate plot choice and not an algorithmic accident.

Listen to Emily Henry! Also, to be honest, I find a lot of romance novels (and their film adaptations) absolutely WILD and off the wall but a lot of what makes them so fun is that you know another human was sitting at a desk making an intentional choice to go there anyway.

Today was the first 90 day deadline for borrowers to get off of SAVE and surprise surprise it’s chaos and several servicers are pushing that date back by 30 days. I still haven’t received my 90 day notice from NelNet (they are all sending them out in waves).

An aside, I’m not sure who the specific muse for patient zero is (other than OBVIOUSLY not Travis) and that’s the whole point. She and her friends dated so many questionable men. I bet that is a scenario she has a lot of familiarity with from multiple angles.

I think it’s when the critical reception isn’t even grounded in an honest assessment of the art that it bothers me the most. Musical taste is subjective, people disagree and different critics can reach opposing conclusions. But to mislead about the plain meanings and messages of the text is wrong.

Some of that just feels like people forgot why her past music was so successful (because it was silly yet fun and relatable). I take issue with some of the production on showgirl and bristle at a few of the lyrics but overall these songs fit naturally in her discography, love it or hate it.

I am not super invested in making people *like* Taylor Swift’s music, she has a large enough fanbase to be successful for the rest of her life. It’s fine for other people to not enjoy it. BUT so much of the criticism really is a not so veiled way to belittle the pov of a lot of WOMEN in gross ways.

The complexity of everything that brought her to that silly joyful place is ever present in this album, persistently tugging at the overall narrative as she tries to resolve her ecstatic feelings with the journey it took to get to this point.

Within the fandom there is definitely a lot of this. I also think there’s something more general about how “older” 🙄 women aren’t seen as being able or allowed to have fun or humor like that. The whole concept of “earned Joy” for us is not widely accepted, which ties into how “cringe” is used too.

Oh yes that’s a good distinction. It’s crazy how that part of Showgirl was so wildly interpreted as a lie when the past lies were interpreted as truth (especially during the whole Joe period tbh…sorry to reduce it to a parter of hers but it’s the easiest shorthand for that body of work).

I think a lot of the “stuck in high school” criticism aimed at her is projection. IMO she uses that imagery because so much of our entire culture is stuck in high school. If you weren’t stuck there you’d recognize the personal growth needed to write songs like Pink Clouding or Ruin the Friendship.

Note: You don’t have to relate to the messages of any piece of music to enjoy it. Also you can relate to the lyrics but not like the sound. Or you can just dislike everything about it but that doesn’t mean you also can’t be honest about the themes and messages of those songs.
