Listen to Emily Henry! Also, to be honest, I find a lot of romance novels (and their film adaptations) absolutely WILD and off the wall but a lot of what makes them so fun is that you know another human was sitting at a desk making an intentional choice to go there anyway.

This is both disgusting and the underlying reality of how a lot of people think about Taylor’s supposed “mediocrity” and you can’t convince me otherwise (from an interview with Todd Rungren, today’s candidate for the smallest man who ever lived)
When you produced Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell, you said at the time that you didn't care if it succeeded or not, because you just wanted to make fun of Bruce Springsteen.
If you produced an album in 2026 to make fun of an artist, who would be your target?
Taylor Swift, of course. There's an argument to be made that she ruined music. It's an understandable phenomenon. It's just that, to me, Taylor Swift is the apotheosis of mediocrity. It's the era of the female artists.
The biggest artists in the world are female artists at this point, and that's because of video games. Back in the '90s, boys stopped spending money on music and started spending it on video games, and that left the music market with, "Well, where do we go here?" And they said, "Well, there's all these young girls and they've got their allowances, too. Why don't we start making music for young girls instead of Pearl Jam or something like that?"

I’ve been thinking a lot about Pyrrhus and how it’s more directly insightful about the civilizational significance of the Odyssey than the Odyssey film (even though it’s about a different part of those legends). The analytical frame she builds is so good. Anyway, vibing through the afternoon…

YES! “I'm like, OK, Ed Sheeran, whatever, but if it doesn't direct the attention to Robert Kraft and if it doesn't direct the attention to the people who actually have the power who are doing these things, then it's for naught.”
“RHIANNON GIDDENS: Right. And I understood that that was a difficult decision. But for me, it wasn't a difficult decision. You know what I mean? Like, you're a multimillionaire. But anyway, look. The second thing is, is just what you said. I'm like, OK, Ed Sheeran, whatever, but if it doesn't direct the attention to Robert Kraft and if it doesn't direct the attention to the people who actually have the power who are doing these things, then it's for naught. We have to be informed.

We have to inform ourselves and stop expecting celebrities to do it for us. We have to go, "What do we stand for?" What are we putting our money towards?
What are we putting our time towards? The entertainment complex is massive. It's too big. There's too many people out there. You know what I'm saying?

Like, put me out of a job. Pick up a banjo, play some music, write your own song. Not to perform for other people but to just like process the emotions that are going on right now. People need art to do that, but they need to do it themselves. And be inspired by somebody who is a really good songwriter or whatever; I'm not saying that. There's room for both.”RHIANNON GIDDENS: Mmhmm, yeah. One of our members is Lebanese. Being in a group that includes somebody from the Congo, that includes somebody from the Armenian diaspora, that includes somebody from India-being in a group where people are bringing the histories with them and telling personal stories, telling what this means, puts it all in a different light. You're just like, if I can't do something like this, what am I doing? What am I doing? We now do "Wein a Ramallah" in our show. And I have interpolated-I've put in-l've written verses about Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Wilmington, 1898, into it. And it's like, if we don't pull our struggles together, if we don't connect the struggles together and the overall larger patterns of extraction, the larger patterns of colonialism, the larger patterns of empire, the larger patterns of massive moneymaking-if we don't connect those dots between the struggles, we are never going to get anywhere. So for me, that's what music is for. That's what art is for. And that's why we have to make music with people from different backgrounds. Because then we have that conversation and then it turns into a song and then it turns into a performance.Rhiannon Giddens interviewed continued (answer to different question):

“But I think that an artist's job is to push on these fissures in society, is to make people uncomfortable, is to make people think about what they're doing, is to make people think, "Who are we morally?" So people who are in power only want the things that are going to keep them in power and that are going to not challenge them. Artists are going to challenge them because that is what we do. So yeah, let's take it down. Take down the Kennedy Center. Take down-what, 40% of new music on Spotify is Al? Like, you see-it's happening. It's happening. People don't even know that they're listing to Al music. The Grammys have-they're not making a stand on how much of music is Al.
We have to label-it should be labeled, it should be regulated, so people can choose whether they opt into Al or not. But this idea, this myth of inevitability-"Well, it's going to happen anyway, so we gotta get in front of it"-no!
Nobody agreed on this. Just the people with the money and the power agreed on this. You know what I mean? So we deserve the opportunity to say, "No."”

“This is to advise that, effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President.
This follows the White House's position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties. There will be no replacement pool put in place.

Also if you have a lot of people in your social network caught up in fascist/supremacist ways of thinking it’s worth it to click and read through to the end. There is something powerful in both being honest about how they are wrong but also releasing yourself from the responsibility to change them.
Last idea for now: You are responsible for your own improvement, not that of others.

Can we imagine an improved John Gannon? I can.

He's had a terrible shock, and he's not alone. A lot of people have recently been faced with the incontrovertible evidence that they belong to a system that exists to abuse and consume human beings.

An improved and improving John Gannon would have to be a John Gannon capable of thinking "who is affected more than me?" and capable of hearing "yes actually this is who we are."

How could we get John Gannon there? is the usual question, but I don't think it's the right question. I think the right question is: Is there anyone who might do something that might help him get himself there?”

Yes. But we are still kind of allergic to this especially where it intersects with faith. IMO saying things like “this is not REAL Christianity” or “there are good and bad republicans” is a form of sidestepping this very needed interrogation of entire worldviews:
“The first idea I offer is this: Our primary opposition is for the worldview, not the individual.

As I see it, we are in contention, first and foremost, with a terrible anti-human worldview. It's a worldview that puts us in frequent but secondary contention with the actual human beings who ascribe to it and promote it, literally all of whom would be better off free of it. So, we would do well to realize the difference between individual stories of Me and collective stories of Us. We'd do best to save our empathy (where appropriate) for individuals, while being ruthless with worldviews.”

This man is a christian libertarian who is mad his religion is in power because he can’t frame himself and his socially uncomfortable beliefs as those held by a poor little persecuted minority anymore. I think it’s the “we haven’t changed” part that is breathtaking for me.
“Staver argues that the Christian law firms have stayed true to their mission, which is promoting conservative values and the free expression of
religion.

"We haven't changed," Staver said. "They have."

Whitehead says that he now sees other issues - including the rights of immigrants and the growth of Flock cameras and other surveillance — as more urgent than the issue of religious liberty.”

“He praises recent Supreme Court decisions affirming the protection of religious exercise, including a 2025 ruling that suburban Maryland parents' religious rights were violated when the school system refused to let them opt their children out of book readings that involved same-sex couples. And he criticizes some Democratic actions, including covid pandemic-era restrictions on houses of worship that were stricter than those on other public spaces.”

It’s not quite that bad imo but I wouldn’t have chosen the analogy given the controversy of the one hold out and the resulting final ruling www.theguardian.com/us-news/live...
“Alright, I just wanted to make a comment, and I'm kind of a history buff. And during World War Two, Winston Churchill was the prime minister of England, when England pretty much stood against Nazi Germany alone. And so Churchill oftentimes had to talk to the citizens and say, let us brace for our duties. I always liked that phrase.
And I thought of that phrase when all of you were agreeing to be on this jury, agreed to brace for that duty, and each one of you knew how long the case was going to go.
You knew how difficult, the case was going to be to listen to, facts wise. But still, you braced for that duty ... I watched every day. Day after day, week after week. All of you performing that duty that you braced for.
And I just kind of wanted to let you know I understood how hard everybody worked in this case. I understood that you all gave everything you could, and probably more than you thought you could.”

"It doesn't matter if she knows who I am. What matters is that she knows who SHE is." Meghan Sussex’s full tribute to Gloria Steinem #sussexsquad
Instagram post by @meghan of her and Gloria Steinem filming a 2020 interview to encourage young people (women) to vote sitting outside under the shade of a large tree on a green lawn in California. Attached song: Just Because I’m a Woman by Dolly Parton.Instagram post with private picture of Gloria with Prince Archie as a toddler displayed in a silver frame and sitting on a wood surface. Attached song: Just Because I’m a Woman by Dolly Parton. From Instagram, the caption on a post with three pictures.

meghan: Celebrating the life and legacy of my friend and mentor, Gloria Steinem, and also grateful to know that in these last few weeks and days she knew exactly how loved and admired she was.

You all know her many accolades and the way in which she helped shape the world for women and all people -
"we are linked, not ranked" she would tell me, and the bracelet she gave me said exactly that. I still wear it with pride.

Publicly, we did interviews together, called young voters to encourage them to have their voices heard, attended award ceremonies, and brainstormed how to help this beautiful yet complicated world to become more equitable.

But privately, she was even better than you would imagine- spending Thanksgiving with our family, introducing me to one of my best friends (forever the champion of female friendship), loving our children with her whole heart, counseling me during hard times, and giving extraordinary advice and perspective with a cup of tea and an unrivaled cheekiness and wit.

But my very favorite story about GLO is when she was out one day in NY, and a woman approached her in absolute awe and said she wanted to introduce her young daughter to her (though she was embarrassed to say the young girl may not know who she was).

Gloria replied: "It doesn't matter if she knows who I am. What matters is that she knows who SHE is."

Rest in peace, and rest in pride. Look at what you've done for all of us. Thank you.

Can I vote in person?

Yes. If you need assistance, each county opens an accessible voting center beginning 18 days before Election Day and ending at 8 p.m. Election Day. Locate your nearest voting center by checking VoteWA.gov or contacting your county elections office.

You can return your mail ballot in person to a county elections office or voting center. You can also get a replacement ballot if needed. Your returned ballot will be processed the same way as a ballot returned by drop box or by mail.

Just ask! Contact your local county elections office if you need a new ballot or did not receive the original ballot. Remember, your county may only accept one ballot and will verify your signature.

Here’s that whole poem “Traveler to where? Say you don't know.”
"TESTAMENT"
by Wendell Berry

And now to the Abyss I pass Of that Unfathomable Grass...

1.
Dear relatives and friends, when my last breath Grows large and free in air, don't call it death --A word to enrich the undertaker and inspire His surly art of imitating life; conspire Against him. Say that my body cannot now Be improved upon; it has no fault to show To the sly cosmetician. Say that my flesh Has a perfect compliance with the grass Truer than any it could have striven for.
You will recognize the earth in me, as before I wished to know it in myself: my earth
That has been my care and faithful charge from birth, And toward which all my sorrows were surely bound, And all my hopes. Say that I have found A good solution, and am on my way
To the roots. And say I have left my native clay At last, to be a traveler; that too will be so.
Traveler to where? Say you don't know.2.

But do not let your ignorance Of my spirit's whereabouts dismay You, or overwhelm your thoughts.
Be careful not to say
Anything too final. Whatever
Is unsure is possible, and life is bigger Than flesh. Beyond reach of thought
Let imagination figure
Your hope. That will be generous To me and to yourselves. Why settle For some know-it-all's despair
When the dead may dance to the fiddle Hereafter, for all anybody knows?
And remember that the Heavenly soil
Need not be too rich to please
One who was happy in Port Royal.
I may be already heading back, A new and better man, toward
That town. The thought's unreasonable,
But so is life, thank the Lord!3.

So treat me, even dead, As a man who has a place To go, and something to do.
Don't muck up my face
With wax and powder and rouge
As one would prettify
An unalterable fact
To give bitterness the lie.
Admit the native earth
My body is and will be, Admit its freedom and Its changeability.
Dress me in the clothes I wore in the day's round.
Lay me in a wooden box.
Put the box in the ground.4.
Beneath this stone a Berry is planted In his home land, as he wanted.
He has come to the gathering of his kin, Among whom some were worthy men,
Farmers mostly, who lived by hand, But one was a cobbler from Ireland,
Another played the eternal fool
By riding on a circus mule
To be remembered in grateful laughter
Longer than the rest. After
Doing that they had to do
They are at ease here. Let all of you Who yet for pain find force and voice Look on their peace, and rejoice.

A poem, by Wendell Berry
DO NOT BE ASHAMED

You will be walking some night in the comfortable dark of your yard and suddenly a great light will shine round about you, and behind you will be a wall you never saw before.
It will be clear to you suddenly that you were about to escape, and that you are guilty: you misread the complex instructions, you are not a member, you lost your card or never had one. And you will know that they have been there all along, their eyes on your letters and books, their hands in your pockets, their ears wired to your bed.
Though you have done nothing shameful, they will want you to be ashamed.
They will want you to kneel and weep and say you should have been like them.
And once you say you are ashamed, reading the page they hold out to you, then such light as you have made in your history will leave you.
They will no longer need to pursue you.
You will pursue them, begging forgiveness, and they will not forgive you.
There is no power against them.
It is only candor that is aloof from them, only an inward clarity, unashamed, that they cannot reach. Be ready.
When their light has picked you out and their questions are asked, say to them:
"I am not ashamed." A sure horizon will come around you. The heron will rise in his evening flight from the hilltop.

I genuinely think he means to say what ICE is doing is wrong but he literally can’t. And he regrets that he didn’t but he still doesn’t. There are A LOT of people like this in our country who lack even the words to speak out with any clarity about what they dislike or think is bad.
“Jelly Roll added that it's always been his intention as an artist to "to be a voice for the voiceless," and that he didn't rise to the challenge that night.
"That night at the Grammys, I had an opportunity to speak up for people who were scared, hurting, and felt like nobody was speaking for them. I had a microphone, and I didn't use it the right way," he admitted. "But my daddy always told me it is never too late to do the right thing"
Wiping away tears, the host continued,
"So l'm going to try to do the right thing right now, because human dignity isn't Republican nor Democrat. Compassion isn't left wing and mercy isn't right wing.
Pain and healing knows no partisanship.
Hurting hearts are more important than poll numbers. And there are no boundaries or borders for broken families."”“Jelly Roll went on to share his
appreciation for the United States and how the country "gave me room and a chance to become something more than the biggest and worst mistake l ever made," adding, "I got to build a life. I got to make music. I got to take care of my family, and I got to stand on that stage that night and win a Grammy, and that is the American dream. And here's what I know: the American dream can't just be for people like me."”“He also admitted that he wished that he'd reminded everyone listening to love their neighbor. "That's what I should've said that night," he said. "There wasn't an asterisk after neighbor. There wasn't a political party exemption. It did not require us to know what country you were born in... And I don't know about y'all, but that's the standard I wanna be held to."
He added that "politicians and algorithms" often try to convince everyone that "the person across the street from us is the reason our life is hard." He continued, "I just want us to remember that the person across the street from us is a human being before they're a voter," he said.
