Although the majority of the line winds above the river, a section of the route also runs above the motorway. The 'unhindered by any other traffic' is exceptionally pleasant along this part of the route 😏

Tonight's timeline cleanser: a ten-minute ride on the Wuppertaler Schwebebahn. For 125 years, the suspension railway wounds it way through the Wupper Valley, unhindered by any other traffic. In half an hour, it covers 13 kilometers, stopping at 20 stations along the way. What a way to get around! 🤩

What a difference a road redesign can make! This redesign shows that a fairer (more space for cyclists and pedestrians), safer, and greener road design is possible, while still providing space for all modalities. 📍Socrateslaan, Utrecht NL

Today, the long distance cycling route between Dutch cities Woerden and Utrecht was officially opened. Routes like this make it possible to cycle smoothly and comfortably between cities and villages, making it more attractive for commuters to choose the bike over the car. youtu.be/6_ev5h9PHOY

Utrecht 🇳🇱 is once again heavily visited by tourists from all corners of the world. Could it be the car-free, pedestrian-friendly city center that makes the city so attractive to many people?! After all, people often go on vacation to see and experience things they don't have at home...

Nobody disputes that having access to a car in a car-dominated society is good. It gives one access to jobs, healthcare, food, education, social opportunities and more. All we're asking is for people to go one step deeper and ask why access to such basic rights requires buying and operating a car.

It would be nice if #LEGO made a whole series of this with different bikes, such as a normal city bike, a cargo bike, a side-by-side tandem bike, a mountain bike, etc. Although thould would probably mean I have to move to a bigger place 😂🤷‍♂️

Update on the #LEGO Road Bike: Building it took up most of the morning and was really fun. It's nice to see how LEGO used very specific existing parts for this bike, like dragon horns from the Ninjago sets for the handlebars and minifigure hockey sticks to form the rails on the saddle.

For my work, I visited an apartment complex under construction. There is still a lot to be done in and around the homes, but in the basement of the complex, the double bicycle racks are already installed for future residents! 👌🏼

To be honest, it hadn't been necessary to cycle along for quite some time, but fortunately, they still enjoyed it when we did so occasionally. But once in high school, parents cycling along will really no longer be tolerated and we will have to make do with our memories 😊

Time to get melancholic 🥹 After 8 years and countless times cycling with our boys to their primary school, through wind and rain, in freezing and tropical temperatures, todays schoolrun was the last one. This routine made them confident cyclists and me a very proud dad! 🥰

Rethinking fair use of public space. Three former parking spaces, previously the privilege of three car owners. Now, each spot accommodates at least ten bicycle owners. And there is even room for a picnic table.

XXL cargo bike setups are a game-changer for supplying shops in city centers. They are sustainable, don't block half the street, and look cool too!

What do the world’s most successful shopping streets have in common? They’re designed for people, not cars. It’s hard to enjoy strolling, browsing and city life when you’re surrounded by 2-ton metal boxes, traffic noise and toxic exhaust. Great retail starts with great public space.

As of today, the speed limit on 270 roads in Utrecht has been lowered to 30 km/h. An important first step in improving road safety, although for now, it only involves new signage and the installation of speed cameras. The necessary redesign of many roads will take place over the coming years.

When the Dafne Schippers Bridge in Utrecht opened in 2017, the area on the other side was still empty land. Today, crossing the bridge means cycling right through a brand-new, high density residential neighborhood. For its residents, a direct link to the 'old' city lies literally on their doorstep.

This is Leidsche Rijn, a large-scale new residential area on the western side of Utrecht. Construction of the district began in the late 1990s and is still ongoing. Currently, over 50,000 people live in Leidsche Rijn; that number is expected to grow to around 66,000 by 2040.

In case you wonder how such a neighbourhood may look like: a recently built neighbourhood, also in Utrecht, gives a good impression: -mixed high- and low density housing -lots of trees and green space -multiple playgrounds -ample space for walking and cycling

Vredenburg in the heart of Utrecht has one of the busiest cycleways in the Netherlands. With private cars excluded, it's reserved for buses, bikes and pedestrians and it moves tens of thousands of people every day through the city centre. Less space for cars, more space for people.

Excellent blog by @bicycledutch.bsky.social, describing and visually showing how Utrecht has changed in a relatively short time. Important takeaway for car-centric cities saying "but we're not Utrecht": Utrecht wasn't either! But then it showed (and still shows) that change is possible!

"Like many cities, Utrecht spent much of the second half of the twentieth century adapting itself to the car. Streets were widened, canals were filled in to create roads, and public space increasingly became space for moving or storing cars."

Mature trees with "kissing canopies" not only enrich city streetscapes, they are also crucial for cities in managing summer heatwaves. The cooling effect and shade they provide make the difference between livable and unlivable streets for everybody using them.
