A wonderful little demo that truly shines on a CRT with beautiful PC-98 style art, and manages to be both earnest and relatable. Definitely worth your time, and I'm looking forward to future updates!

It's surreal to see mainline touhou on console + offical steam translations after 24 years, and honestly, these redrawn sprites look incredible. I feel like this will really be a watershed moment for the series as a whole, especially in the west.

sometimes i like to read visual novels with this old handset i modified. it's a very classic feeling, almost like you're talking to the girls on the phone...

Alysa Liu recently went viral for her Teen Vogue rant on the correct way to read Higurashi. "It's gotta be with the original sprites and backgrounds", the figure skater said, adding "it's important to remember this was Ryukishi's vision and should be viewed as a holistic work."

Ironically enough, PC-98 VNs (which are 16:10) do widescreen visuals better than most modern ones.

With the new Shizuku translation out on it's 30th anniversary, it's a better time than any to experience the game that coined the term "visual novel". Here's the intro on real hardware!

It's time to end this...

It's nice seeing the setup from Shion's perspective. Starting to fill in the gaps.

Finally got my steam deck to output 640x480 on my CRT, so much more convenient than using my old PC. Gonna start posting pics again unspoilered... so look away if you haven't read

the rest of the story basically played out the same, but they kept ataru's agency which was a nice touch. we'll leave off with this solid reaction image.
000
figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
as for the original anime, they changed a LOT. for starters, the stormtroopers kidnap ataru in the clock tower - a location that actually will come up again in the first movie. also they added this big guy for some reason??? ataru got roped & the ufo design is also way less oni

figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
now since the new series skips this, lum just kinda moves in and ataru does nothing to stop her - it's lacking the give and take that makes this situation compelling.
110
figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
also the implications of this ending are absolutely insane, not to mention ataru's still trying to fix things up.
100
figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
and here is a seemingly innocuous story beat that the new adaptation skipped over and in my opinion suffered as a result. ataru is basically forced to accept lum living with him because the world is doomed otherwise - she literally saves him and he has to accept that.
100
figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
now something to note is that unlike in the anime, lum didn't use her electric powers at all in the tag game, so this is the first time we're seeing it after her initial landing. moving lum away from being so physical was definitely the right choice in the long run.
100
figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
it's always a good day to speak wingdings, and it's also really funny that the actual reason that lum ends up sticking around is because of the UNION. as for ataru's parents, they get the honor of having rumiko's first instance of characters falling over from shock
100
figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
credit to the translators, by the way. it's the small details like patterns in the sound effects that really tie it all together.
100
figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
the taxi driver on the other hand has a wonderfully "weird yet benign" design. like yeah, he's a blob from space, but he's also just doing his job.
100
figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
background calculus would do it for anyone. and the taxi ufo, despite not being oni has a very oni-like pattern. the pattern doesn't even serve a story purpose - it's just one of those things that makes you think.
100
figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
now the reason that rumiko stated for why she brought lum back is that she got stuck on the storyboards for this chapter, but i like to imagine she was already getting word of lum's initial popularity which is where the proto stormtroopers come from. just my headcanon of course.

figamin @figamin.net · 03/02/2025
time for chapter 3! today's issue cover is just ataru, but the chapter cover goes back to the dramatic (and reminds me a lot of the original star wars poster)
110
figamin @figamin.net · 01/02/2025
it's also the first gag ending where status quota saves the day - and this is a really fun panel, especially with all the imps just fooling around. i plan to cover two chapters a day. most of the trivia comes from @furinkan.com who's been doing this longer than i've been around.
000
figamin @figamin.net · 01/02/2025
it's also a good example of the "rough" look the early anime had (due to being rushed). lot of QUALITY faces here ripe for the memeing
100
figamin @figamin.net · 01/02/2025
this chapter's adaptation (ep 6b) felt the need to put lum in the middle of things - all it really serves is to repeat lum vs shinobu story beats
100
figamin @figamin.net · 01/02/2025
that aside, the story is lower stakes (necessarily imo), and a lot of these panels are all time greats. it's hard to describe rumiko's early style - it's a touch closer to realism than what it would develop into, giving the characters a "mature" flair, but still clearly cartoony.
100
figamin @figamin.net · 01/02/2025
not a whole lot to say with this chapter, it's simple and fun. it's more interesting in hindsight because it's the only UY chapter to stick with the initial direction of "weirdness comes to ataru/shinobu" before lum was brought back. i wonder how that plot would have developed.
100
figamin @figamin.net · 01/02/2025
for chapter 2, the cover of the issue features the art from chapter 1 with lum, and yet the chapter inside is totally absent of her, a complete flip of the first chapter. funny how that turned out.
